    Hi AJ,

Thanks for your interest. There are a couple different ways you could distinguish events in different cities.

One way is to have a different Event Categories for each city. So instead of categories like Meetings, Parties, etc. you would have categories like Chicago, New York, etc. Then you could link to calendars by category (as explained here) so that users could see the events for one city at a time. If you have the cities as categories, you could also use this free plugin to color your events by category.

Events Calendar PRO 3.0 includes a Location Search feature, which might be extremely useful to you and your users. You may also be able to build an additional city filter for the calendar, although that would require heavy customization and is not something we can provide extensive support for.

One more thing that may interest you is that we are working on a Filters Bar add-on. That will allow users to search for events by criteria like Category, Tag, Venue, and more. You can check out a preview of that plugin here (scroll to the bottom of the page).

I hope that gives you some good options. If you have any further questions, just let me know.

    Cheers,
    Leah

Thanks Phil! If you need help, feel free to post a thread in our PRO forum. If you do not have a PRO license, you’ll need to post your issue to the open source forum. We hit that forum about once a week as we can, since our core effort is on the premium forums.

    Hi elmalak,

Thanks for getting in touch. Although The Events Calendar and Events Calendar PRO do not have all those features built in, they may provide a good base from which you can customize. If you are not comfortable with code, I suspect you will need to find a different solution or hire someone to assist you.

a website where users can create events, and subscribe to events.

Our Community Events plugin allows users to create events. Users can also subscribe to event listings via RSS.

Each event should have an Event page – to allow users to discuss, share information, review the event and so on.

The Events Calendar does automatically generate a page for each event. However, the page does not include discussion, reviews, etc. You may be able to add those with a third-party plugin, or via custom code.

Since you want to add lots of info about the event, you might want to look in Event Calendar PRO’s custom event attribute feature. That would allow event creators to mark things like Type of Sport and Distance.

This should all be searchable/filterable so the user can find stuff they’re interested in.

The Events Calendar 3.0 (coming very soon) has a keyword search option. Events Calendar PRO 3.0 (which will be released at the same time) also has a location search. We are also working on a Filters Bar add-on so users can search for events based on criteria like Event Category, Venue, and Day.

We eventually want users to be able to upload GPS route info (eg .gpx files)

Again, this is not something that is built into The Events Calendar (there are regular Google Maps) you could probably do it with a third-party plugin or some custom code.

I hope that answered your questions. Good luck with the project!

    Hi Zoe,

Thanks for your enthusiasm! However, just to be clear, Events 3.0 does not include a category selection feature. Our Filters Bar plugin, which is still in-progress, will. We hope to release that soon after 3.0. However, we do not have betas available at this time. Thanks for your patience while we finish that up.

Alternatively, you might want to check out our alternative work around for category selection, as explained in this FAQ. If you have any more questions, feel free to start a new thread in this forum.

    Hi Elaine,

Thanks for your interest. At this time, it is not possible to create multiple calendars. You can make category-only calendars using links, as explained in this FAQ. Forgive me if that’s the method you were referring to which wouldn’t work- I am not 100% sure I understand what you’re saying about the theme and default sidebars. Shortcodes do not work well with The Events Calendar, so that is unfortunately not an option.

Also, as mentioned in the FAQ, we are working on a Filters Bar plugin add-on that will allow users to sort events by criteria like Event Category, Venue, Day, and more. We hope to be releasing that soon after 3.0.

I recommend that you download our free core plugin, The Events Calendar, and play with it before deciding to purchase PRO. That way you can see if it’ll work for you with no purchase needed. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to start a new thread in this forum.

    Best,
    Leah
