I have a site that I am creating and will have the following idea and I was wondering if the Events Calendar can be used to achieve it?

It’s a website where users can create events, and subscribe to events.
Each event should have an Event page – to allow users to discuss, share information, review the event and so on.
The site is to eventually hold thousands of events.

We want the site to be a ‘hub’ for amateur sports races, where users can list an upcoming race that they’re aware of.

    When listing an event, these would be the main points of info about the event;
    Type of sport
    Distance
    Location
    Date/Time
    No. of participants

This should all be searchable/filterable so the user can find stuff they’re interested in.

These events would often be starting and ending in out-of-the way locations (eg, the middle of a field!) so it would require the user to click on a map to specify the beginning point and ending point. We eventually want users to be able to upload GPS route info (eg .gpx files) that would map the winding path that the trail would often take, which wouldn’t otherwise be mapped by Google.

    Many thanks.

    Hi elmalak,

Thanks for getting in touch. Although The Events Calendar and Events Calendar PRO do not have all those features built in, they may provide a good base from which you can customize. If you are not comfortable with code, I suspect you will need to find a different solution or hire someone to assist you.

a website where users can create events, and subscribe to events.

Our Community Events plugin allows users to create events. Users can also subscribe to event listings via RSS.

Each event should have an Event page – to allow users to discuss, share information, review the event and so on.

The Events Calendar does automatically generate a page for each event. However, the page does not include discussion, reviews, etc. You may be able to add those with a third-party plugin, or via custom code.

Since you want to add lots of info about the event, you might want to look in Event Calendar PRO’s custom event attribute feature. That would allow event creators to mark things like Type of Sport and Distance.

This should all be searchable/filterable so the user can find stuff they’re interested in.

The Events Calendar 3.0 (coming very soon) has a keyword search option. Events Calendar PRO 3.0 (which will be released at the same time) also has a location search. We are also working on a Filters Bar add-on so users can search for events based on criteria like Event Category, Venue, and Day.

We eventually want users to be able to upload GPS route info (eg .gpx files)

Again, this is not something that is built into The Events Calendar (there are regular Google Maps) you could probably do it with a third-party plugin or some custom code.

I hope that answered your questions. Good luck with the project!

    Best,
    Leah
