    Hey Karen,

    By “Vulnerability”, do you mean that you found a security vulnerability specifically somewhere in the code? If so, please let us know in more detail so we can patch it immediately.

    Otherwise, to address item #3 here, what things really come down to is that you have 29,000 entries.

    You admit in #1 that your server crashes when even trying to load 100 or 200 events, so the problem may be with your site’s infrastructure more so than The Events Calendar itself.

    Hey Gwyneth,

    There are possible courses of action here โ€“ย if you don’t know HTML, then unfortunately creating a custom button or something is a bit tricky because we don’t offer support for building out customizations ourselves ๐Ÿ™ sorry to bear that news.

    You might find it easiest, perhaps, to just use a URL shortener. Google’s, for example, is here โ†’ https://goo.gl/

    And so instead of using your long regonline URL directly, you can paste that long URL into the goo.gl URL shortener, shorten it, then use the new shortened URL instead. It’ll look like this: http://goo.gl/hp3P25

    If you click that, it’ll take you to http://theeventscalendar.com

    The Google URL Shortener even lets you track clicks on the link, which is a handy stat to have, so that’s pretty cool too (screenshot โ†’ https://cloudup.com/c1wRTiIHAZ0).

    Just an idea there. If you’re interested in making a more complex customization, there are two resources I can recommend that might be helpful. First is our Themer’s Guide, which outlines the process for adding custom Events Calendar template files on your site โ†’ https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/themers-guide/

    However, since you mentioned not knowing HTML, you may find it easiest to hire someone to build what you need. We have a list of well-reviewed freelance customizers here โ†’ https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/find-a-customizer/

    I hope all of this information helps. Let us know if it does!

    Thanks for clarifying Cappy โ€“ย I believe they are using this plugin, which is not an “official” one by Modern Tribe (i.e., we don’t make it and don’t support it), but it’s solidly coded and maintained by one of our most awesome community members, Andy Fragen โ†’ https://wordpress.org/plugins/the-events-calendar-category-colors/

    Try it out! Let us know if that suits your needs well.

    Hey Eduard,

    1. What version of The Events Calendar is active on your site?
    2. What version of Events Calendar Pro are you trying to activate?

    This error comes from having out-of-date code, so your best option is to head to http://theeventscalendar.com/my-account/downloads and download the latest version of Events Calendar Pro which is currently version 3.11.1.

    Install that on your site, if it is not already.

    Then, go to wordpress.org/plugins/the-events-calendar and download the latest version of the code form there. Ensure that the The Events Calendar itself is at version 3.11.2 on your site before trying to activate Events Calendar Pro.

    Let us know if this helps at all!

    Hey Peter,

    I’m really sorry to hear about these issues on your site โ€“ย they are definitely non-normative however, and indicate perhaps a theme or plugin conflict here.

    I’m sorry to recommend these troubleshooting steps so early in the handling of your issue, but would you mind running through the steps outlined here? Try creating a ticket on some random test event after Each step along the way โ†’ https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/testing-for-conflicts/

    This process will reveal a theme or plugin conflict if there is one, which is an essential step here because I cannot recreate any of these problems and these basic features should totally be working.

    Let us know what you find Peter โ€“ thank you!

    Hey Brian,

    Better handling forced newlines like the ones you’re using here would indeed be a useful feature for the iCal Importer. The iCal Importer is very new, so we’ve got lots of improvements in the pipeline for it. Stay tuned to udpates!

    In the meantime, I’m curious โ€“ย I used the .ics file data you posted here to create an .ics file and test importing it, and the iCal Importer didn’t even seem to register the event file as one that could be imported. In other words: I was not able to import the event using the iCal Importer altogether, so I couldn’t see how the newlines issue looked directly on my site.

    The reason I wanted to see how it looked was because I’m curious: after import, are you at least able to go to the event directly in your WordPress admin area and manually edit the body of the event description to get rid of those ‘nn’ characters and form the new paragraphs as you desire?

    Sorry about the disappointing handling of newlines thus far!

    Hey Helen,

    If you do mean that these errors arise for you in your dashboard by way of the “Advanced Post Manager” filets, then yes, unfortunately this a known bug ๐Ÿ™

    As you can imagine, as a set of “calendar” and “events”-related plugins the ability to sort things by start and end date is pretty important! We’re working really hard to figure out this problem, because it did originally work in our first QA passes for the most recent Advanced Post Manager release, but then other bug behavior rose.

    I do not have a specific date in mind for when we will release the fix, as we are still working on the fix, but I assure we will release it as soon as possible.

    I’m really sorry about the frustration that this leaves us with ๐Ÿ™ Please let me know if there’s anything I can help with in the meantime or if you have any other questions at all.

    Thank you!

    Hey Cappy,

    Can you clarify exactly what you mean by “add a category legend in the template”?

    What is a category legend?

    Are there examples of this online that you can link to for reference?

    Apologies for my misunderstanding here! I just want to say “yes” or “no” without knowing precisely what you mean ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks,

    Hey Karen,

    Sure thing, apologies for not realizing the depth of that issue for you! There are a few solutions here:

    1. In the admin list view for your events, click the “Screen options” tab in the upper-right of the admin page. An option for how many events should show on the page will appear โ€“ย increase this option as high as you server will allow (it should at least be 100 or 200, though it might take a few moments to load!). This way you can work with much more than 20 events at a time.

    2. If that still is not enough of an advantage, you could use a plugin to do this. There are many bulk-deletion plugins out there. We do not endorse any of them, and if you use a third-party plugin it is at your own risk, we do not officially support any plugin of this type. This plugin is the most highly-rated of this type, I have not used it but it has many great reviews โ†’ https://wordpress.org/plugins/bulk-delete/. Just an example.

    3. If neither option #1 nor #2 are appealing here, you can indeed hire someone to come up with a custom solution. We have a list of well-recommended developers here that you can check out, and can contact at any time to see if they can help with your issues here โ†’ https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/find-a-customizer/

    Hey Peter,

    Cool, glad to know you’re wiling to flex your coding muscles here! It’s important to note that we cannot offer support for code, technically speaking, so I can’t offer line-by-line code instructions here, and we can’t help debug or troubleshoot problems you encounter while trying to write your custom code here.

    But we can help with the general principles, and can hopefully give you enough kindling to build a fire of customization-ability on your own ๐Ÿ™‚

    Okay, so there are three main things to work through here. I’ll break them down as follows.

    1. Identifying which events are “Featured”

    This ties closely to question #1 that you asked in your reply above. You can use tags OR categories, it’s really up to you โ€“ย however, categories may make the most sense and are generally a bit simpler to work with.

    2. Getting a list of “Featured” events

    Question #2 in your reply gets at this idea, although your line of thinking is a bit off track of what I would personally recommend. Instead of using filters and actions or anything like that, i.e. modifying existing queries, your best option is really to just make a separate call of the tribe_get_events() function.

    Where, exactly, should you call this function? We’ll get to that in the next part. But for now, just wrap your head around how this function works. Your best way of doing that is to read through this knowledgebase article here โ†’ https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/using-tribe_get_events/

    Since tribe_get_events() essentially just wraps WP_Query, you can use category parameters quite easily. This is where using a category is easier than using a tag for labeling “Featured” events: let’s say you use an Event Category named “Featured” to label featured events (no need to get fancy or clever! ๐Ÿ™‚ ) You could query for those events with a bit of code like this:

    $events = tribe_get_events( array(
    'posts_per_page' => 5,
    'start_date' => new DateTime(),
    'tribe_events_cat' => 'featured'
    ) );

    And bam, there you go โ€“ that $events variable will hold up to 5 upcoming events from the “Featured” category.

    3. Putting that list of “Featured” events atop The Events Calendar’s List View

    As you mention in Question #3 in your last reply, you will need to make a custom Events Calendar template in your theme to place this tribe_get_events() call and the display loop after it to actually show the Events.

    Your first course of action on this front should be to read this Knowledgebase article here โ†’ https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/themers-guide/

    Using those principles, if you make a version of this file in your theme you should be able to build from there:

    /src/views/list/loop.php

    I hope this all helps!

    Check out the articles I linked to; make back-ups of everything along the way so that you can experiment safely without damaging your site; and take your time working through things. If it seems complex, it genuinely is not โ€“ย once you get some basic code working things tend to “click” with WordPress code like this and it’s pretty intuitive.

    Best of luck with your customizations ๐Ÿ™‚

    Apologies for forgetting that detail @cliff! Thanks for the reminder ๐Ÿ™‚

    That is a large, non-normative amount of venues, but regardless of that, please know that we are working on this and will include improvements as soon as we’re able to do so.

    Stay tuned to product updates, and read the “Changelogs” of the updates to see if improvements have arrived yet.

    Stay tuned!
