After more thorough testing, it does seem like “category” is limited as the only option in [tribe_events] while our widget shortcodes can support “categories”.

Most of our plugins will do exactly what you described. The exception to that is Event Aggregator actually uses our server to process importing events, and as such would not work without an active license.
Otherwise, all plugins will work up to the last update that you were licensed for, but no further support or updates would be available.

It sounds like you might want Event Aggregator. It is a paid add-on to our free The Events Calendar and sounds like it will meet your needs.

In Using One License for Live and Dev Sites https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/using-one-license-live-dev-sites/, we do specify which domain structures that we currently support for staging sites.ย
If your site doesn’t match the criteria, you can still use the plugin.ย You will need to manually run updates, the license may not register (or you could register it there while building and later Move Your License Key https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/moving-your-license-keys/.ย If you need to contact support during that time, please manually send in your System Info.

I am limited in my ability to help without a link to view your calendar live on your site. Do you have a way that I can bypass maintenance mode and a link to the exact events page?
Can you start by going through our Testing for Conflicts Guide https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/testing-for-conflicts/?ย I am wondering if you might have a plugin or theme conflict.ย Begin by deactivating all other plugins, using a theme such as Twenty Seventeen https://wordpress.org/themes/twentyseventeen/, and see if the issue still persists.
Also, double check for any other updates available (Dashboard ยป Updates).ย
Please let me know if the issue still persists after these tests.
