Good evening Aaron and welcome to the Events Calendar Support forum!

Thank you for reaching out to us.

We are sorry to hear about the link to your event being broken. Yikes!
I would love to help you with this topic.

The first thing I would recommend is going through the following suggestions: https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/fixing-http-404-errors/

If that does not solve it, as a first troubleshooting step, could you please provide us with your complete system information in a private reply using the instructions found in the following link?

    https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/sharing-sys-info/

Let me know how that goes.

    Best regards,
    Geoff B.

Okay, I tried deactivating all my plugins and that didn’t work I also checked the theme. I have a theory but I don’t know your code. A while back I changed all the files in my database to have a custom naming convention beyond the standard wp- file naming system. I was reading that this significantly increases the security of a site since hackers typically look for only wp- in their hacks.

Would that have effected your plugin?

One more piece of info. most of our event links work fine. it’s only our recently added event links that don’t work.

    Good afternoon Aaron,

    Thank you for writing back.

Without knowing for sure what you changed, it’s hard to say exactly if this will impact our plugin’s normal functioning.

What I can tell you however, is that our plugin does rely heavily on the ability to be able to use the pretty permalinks structure. It also needs exclusivity over the slugs defined under Events -> Settings -> General (in other words, no “real” page should have these slugs.

As a first troubleshooting step, could you please provide us with your complete system information in a private reply using the instructions found in the following link?

    https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/sharing-sys-info/

And while you are at it, would it be possible to get a few examples of events that works and ones that do not ?

    Hang in there!

    Best regards,

    Geoff B.

    Good evening Aaron,

Thank you for the system information.
    I see what you mean.

Since this is a flat out 404 message, it makes me think that there is something interfering with our plugin’s built-in redirect functionalities.

    Here are my recommendations:

    1. Please ensure there is no page named “event”. As stated earlier, this slug has to be exclusive to our calendar.
    2. Please ensure that there is no redirection rule for the /event/ slug

If all of that fails, it looks like there might be some type of conflict at play.
    This is usually because of:

    1. A conflict with another plugin
    2. A conflict with your WordPress theme
    3. A template customization for the Events Calendar that requires updating

A first quick test is to simply temporarily revert back to a default WordPress theme such as twenty-sixteen to see if the issue persists.

The next step would be to go through our testing for conflicts procedure (preferably in a staging/dev environment or local install of your WordPress website) and let us know what you find out.

Basically the goal here is to revert back to a bare WordPress installation to see if the problem persists. It also allows us to pinpoint what the cause of the issue is.

But, before you do that, there are 2 things I would advise:

    1. Make a backup of your database
    2. Consider activating a “Maintenance Page” plugin if you are doing this on your live site (to minimize impact on your visitors)

Let me know how that goes.

    Best regards,
    Geoff B.

I have already tried these steps.

    What else can I do?

I accidentally marked my own reply as the correct answer. That doesn’t turn this thread off your radar does it? I just want to make sure cuz I can’t figure out how to undo my “correct answer” selection.

    Good evening Aaron,

After examination, it looks like there is something interfering with the permalinks.

This could be coming from a couple of places. It’s hard to know for sure at this point.

What we know for sure is that recurring events work perfectly: http://www.southfellowship.org/event/ifsouth-fellowship/2017-02-03/

But somehow, a normal single event does not http://www.southfellowship.org/event/disciple-making-bootcamp/

I am also noticing that you have potentially up to 3 plugins that could have impacts even when deactivated:

    1. Wordfence
    2. W3TC
    3. WP Defender

This is because these plugins rewrite important files such as .htaccess and wp-config.

My next recommendation would be to install the WP debug bar and take a look at the files above.
In fact, I would like to take a look at them if possible.

    Hang in there!

Feel free to do what you need to do to try to get it to work. Also, I’m not convinced its a repeat event vs singe event issue. I think its all new events that don’t work.

I have disabled the plugins you listed bellow and tried testing without them there with the same issue.

    Let me know
