Hi
We have a site which has some events returning 404 errors.
https://thenewreformtemple.com/event/confirmation-service/Followed your guide here:
https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/fixing-http-404-errors/
Seems that changing the permalinks to the default settings works to restore the events but we don’t want the default links we would like to have our custom Permalinks. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Thank you for your help on this one too.

April 18, 2018 at 5:34 am #1510081juanfraKeymasterHi Jared,
Thank you for reaching out to us! I hope you’re doing well.
Changing the events permalink structure is not something possible without doing some custom coding.
And, as you will find in the following article it is a best practice to use “Post Name” option > https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/permalinks-best-practices/
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have other questions and I’ll be happy to help.
Best,

Thanks but I think you are misunderstanding our problem. We don’t want to create custom permalinks for events. Some of our events are showing 404 errors. To make those 404 errors go away we have to use the WordPress default permalink settings without the “pretty” URLs. If we switch to any other type of permalink the 404 errors return. We don’t want to make custom permalinks for event URLs.
Hope this is clearer. Please check my example I provided earlier to see the problem.
Thanks!
April 18, 2018 at 6:32 am #1510118juanfraKeymasterHi,
Thank you for the follow-up and the clarification.
I see that all your events have a different URL than the one you’ve sent me, with the date following the permalink. And if you go and add the event date to the one you’ve sent me, it actually doesn’t give a 404. https://thenewreformtemple.com/event/confirmation-service/2018-05-18/
Have you done any customization to your permalinks?
Best,
Juan.
April 18, 2018 at 7:07 am #1510136Jared ShihParticipantYes, that is the problem. We have not made any changes beyond just changing the permalink options in WordPress.
April 19, 2018 at 11:31 am #1511508juanfraKeymasterHi Jared,
Thanks for the follow-up.
Let me ask you one question, is this happen randomly or with recurring events?
Best,
Juan.
April 19, 2018 at 12:03 pm #1511530Jared ShihParticipantIt appears to be random, only a few events display this issue. Toggling off WP Permalinks and using the default ugly permalinks fixes the issue but this is not something that we want to do.
April 19, 2018 at 12:11 pm #1511538juanfraKeymasterHi Jared,
Thanks for the follow-up.
I was unable to reproduce your issue on my local install. The events are always rendered in their single template without giving any 404. Would you please run a Conflicts Test? You can start the test by temporarily changing your theme to another one like Twenty Seventeen and deactivating plugins.
That will let us know if the problem is related to the plugin or if there’s another product (theme and/or plugin) that is causing some type of conflict.
Please, don’t forget to backup your database before changing anything and ideally, this should be done on a staging environment.
Best,
Juan

1. Go to the calendar and go to the month of May: https://thenewreformtemple.com/events/2018-05/
2. Go down to May 20th.
3. Click on Confirmation Service or Confirmation Ceremony: http://icecream.me/26487313e76ac941753b4519d79c1e9f
4. The URL for the event is generated without the /2018-05 affix and thus generates a 404 error since it’s not the correct URLAll other events work fine as far as I can tell.

April 20, 2018 at 6:42 am #1512070juanfraKeymasterHi Jared,
Thank you for the follow-up and the instructions. I’ve been able to see that those two events are the ones giving 404.
I wanted to ask you if those events that are returning the 404 are or were recurring events? Would you please try to edit and save them?
Also, I’d like you to ask you to update The Events Calendar to the latest version. Please have in mind that it is always recommended to update in a staging environment.
Besides that, would you please confirm me that you ran the Conflicts Test and the permalink error was still there? I can see you have many plugins in your WordPress install, and maybe the conflict is plugin related.
Thank you,
Juan.
