PS — It would help if I could see the Event ID on each event that the extension calls out. I’ve looked and can’t find it in the list or in the edit pages for events. That way, I could tell which of two strings of recurring events, that are duplicates, to delete. Where’s that ID hiding?

    Thanks

I think that extension is going to be just the ticket (no pun intended) as soon as I figure out the best way to use it without deleting the wrong stuff.

As I’m looking at my list of recurring events, I’m surprised that the list is dragging around two years’ worth of events from the past. I take it if I delete those in the name of lightening the load, they will no longer appear on the calendar back in the day? I think that’s okay, as few if any people need to know when an event was two years ago — especially if they can see the same event as it’s scheduled in the present. My question is, are there any unwanted consequences to deleting events that have already occurred/recurred in the past? Like, if I delete the original first event in a series, will that affect all subsequent instances including today and tomorrow? I don’t want to start deleting things before I know just how much I’m ripping up.

    Thanks, Jaime

Thanks, Mathew. Definitely a plot twist on my findings.

Courtney, I’m using the Vestige Theme, which is highly structured using SiteOrigin Page Builder. When I switch to one of the alternate themes, everything goes straight to hell — there’s no way to tell in the resulting jumble whether the causes of this or that issue have been revealed.

But you know…life is short and now that I have a solution to this small problem, I’m content to move on to other matters.

Thanks very much for your help (and giving me access to Mathew!)

    Cheers,

    Jim

It’s set to default. I will choose custom and give it black, see what happens.

Yup, what that did was create a black background for the white font to show up on. It looks great, but the “customize” option then is not for the font, it’s for whatever background you want to supply for a font that is default-white (and not editable, that I can see).

Here’s the thing: the default must have been default blue (more or less) because that’s the background that was showing in the month-view calendar (which turns the calendar font white), and used to show up in the upcoming events stack, too. Somehow, that color is not being transferred along with the event into the upcoming events stack on the landing page. It used to, but somewhere along the line it stopped. I can “custom” that same color and get the same old result. But I suggest that y’all need to let people know about this workaround, or make it so the featured highlight color travels with the event.

Mathew, before this “white font” thing became a problem, “featured event” (in event options, not event categories) differed from other events in the stack because it showed a small version of the featured image above the linking text with event name, date and location. If there was no featured image, then it didn’t, but the the text linking to the event’s page was always visible. I think you nailed it when you said the text is there, it’s just invisible because it’s set at “white.” At least, that is completely consistent with what’s there on the page.

    Courtney —

With the “workaround” in place — simply a matter of not checking any boxes in the “Event Options” section — you’re not going to see anything unusual. The website is http://www.sfvaudubon.org and the upcoming events stack is on the left of the landing page as you scroll down past the slider. But like I said, you’re not going to see anything out of the ordinary.
When the problem is there, it’s exactly as Mathew describes it above — the “featured image” is present, as it should be when “feature event” is selected in “Event Options.” But no text is visible, though the pointer appears over the invisible text and links to the event’s page. If you know when you’re going to be looking, I can create the problem for you to look at and don’t mind leaving it that way for a couple of hours. Let me know.

    Thanks

Excellent, Mathew — can I get on board your ticket so as to follow the progress of the (presumed) solution? If only so I can go back to featuring/stickifying events? I know this didn’t happen in previous versions, so I guess we should be optimistic about a fix.

    Thanks again,

    Jim

I figured it out — the two events that were checked as “feature event” and “sticky in month view” in Event Options (not in Event Categories) were the ones where the featured image was all that appeared in the upcoming events stack. If you have an answer for this, please share it. Otherwise, I’m just going to do without Event Options and get back to work.

    Thanks.

    Jim

PS I did give you our web address and the error was right on the landing page. However, now I’ve fixed it per the above, so there’s nothing for you to see.

I tried checking the “featured” box to see if it made a difference. It does not. I’m pretty careless about the “featured” box, as I don’t have the plugin set to show only featured events, thus it doesn’t really change anything when it is or isn’t checked.

Don’t apologize. This theme has evil built into it, that I have encountered more than once. If I had the whole thing to do over again…but I don’t. I really appreciate you going to all this trouble, only to find that it’s someone else’s fault. It’s an enormous help — and stuff I should’ve done myself but I’m very nervous about loading 2015 and all that. I’m very afraid of breaking things.

Again, you’ve been great and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you giving your time to this. If you want to leave the thread open for a while, I’ll let you know what happens and you can add it to your own personal knowledge base. OTOH, if you need me to click on “My issue is resolved” I will do that.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I’m wondering what happened with the files and database I sent you. It’s been a while. I missed a couple of events I should have “fixed” and have received angry phone calls. I’m getting quite tired of this. I’m attaching a recurring event, as it appears on the site, when it is clicked from the EC. I’m also attaching a screen shot of the edit page, which shows the correct time. How am I supposed to fix this?? The only way is to break the series for each event and correct it by hand.
Also, notice that the scheduling for the event says “On the 17th of every month.” It happened to be on the 17 of May, but it was set up to be the third Saturday of every month — and shows the 20th (the third Saturday) on the actual event page.
This disconnect between the setup/edit page and what people are seeing…it’s eating my lunch! Please, I realize I’m just one customer out of thousands, but I need this straightened out. This is a very ordinary WordPress site, no Custom CSS, no weird stuff.
    Please!

    • This reply was modified 7 years, 1 month ago by Jim. Reason: I wanted to add a screen shot of the May event when it's broken from the series. Now, it shows the time at 7:ooAM (wrong!) and the date as May 20th (correct!)
