Hello – I upgraded to the 4.2 versions of both The Events Calendar and The Events Calendar PRO earlier today. And it looks like the event time in the Details section of the event page is not showing up when the event is set as recurring. I’ve tried disabling all plugins except for the two Events Calendar plugins and also reverted to Twenty Fourteen, and the time still does not display when the event is set as recurring.

See screenshots attached — “Non-Recurring Event.png” is how the info is displayed in Twenty Fourteen with no other plugins active and the event set as a one-time event. “Recurring Event.png” is the exact same event with the only change being that Recurrence Rules were set to weekly. You’ll see that the time goes missing. I tried playing around with various recurrence timelines and none displayed the time correctly. I did check previously created recurring events and the time is displaying correctly for those, so it seems like this is an issue for newly created events.

Also, the custom recurrence description set when the event is set to recurring is not being displayed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi again – in playing around a bit more, I decided to remove the category label on the new event I created to see how that looked. When there is no category label, the time on the recurring event displays correctly. Just wanted to pass that along in case it helps 🙂

Good evening Sumaiya and welcome to the Events Calendar Support forum!

Thank you for reaching out to us and for providing us with very helpful insight.

We are sorry to hear about the time of events disappearing on you after the update
I would love to help you with this topic.

As a first troubleshooting step, could you please provide us with your complete system information in a private reply using the instructions found in the following link?

    https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/sharing-sys-info/

Secondly, could you please provide me with a screenshot of your exact event settings (tickets and all). In other words, the content of your Edit Event screen. The reason for this is that I am trying to replicate the issue, but I am not able to do that on my end yet.

    Best regards,

    Geoff B.

    Good evening Sumaiya,

Thank you for your reply and for the system information.

You are right, this is very odd.

I am noticing another issue with that event, however, and that is that when I’m on the events page and select the first date of the recurring event (a class), it takes me to the last date of the class. It’s only happening for the first class date; the other three classes in the calendar/list views all point to correct dates.

Actually when I follow your instructions and click on the July 12th entry, the link takes me to the expected July 12th entry (and not the August 2nd one).
Is it possible you have some kind of caching solution in place on your website ?

As for the missing time related issue, I am still unable to replicate it on my end (but I am trying hard).
Would it be possible for you to (in a private reply):

    • Send me a copy of your WordPress theme / child theme in a .zip file link (via Dropbox or Google Drive) so that I can run some tests on my end ?
    • Send me a printscreen of your WordPress timezone settings

Additionally, could you try the 2 following things:

    • Go to Events -> Settings -> Display and re-save your settings
    • Go to Settings > Permalinks and re-save your settings

Hang in there as we try to figure things out

    Have a great day!

    Good afternoon Sumaiya,

Thank you for your answer, your awesome collaboration and the files.

I’m a bit puzzled by the redirections popping up seemingly out of nowhere.
As you might know, the Events Calendar actually relies heavily on all sorts of redirection to work properly. I’m just not sure how these are ending up in your redirection plugin logs (if I understood you correctly) ?

I will  run a bunch of tests with your files and try to replicate. I will get back to you on Monday with my findings (as we are unfortunately closed on weekends). Let me know if you come up with anything on your end as well.

    Have a good week-end,

    Geoff B.

Hey Geoff – I’ve been playing around a bit more and it just gets curiouser and curiouser 🙂

This time around, I wasn’t able to replicate the time not displaying in the Event Details section except in preview mode (after entering all of the info, before publishing). The time is missing in preview mode, but then shows up fine after I hit publish. Not sure if there was a delay in seeing a fix after re-saving both Permalinks and Events Settings per your suggestion the other day. I haven’t made any other changes to my site. I’ll keep playing around, but this one may be resolved (except for the missing time in Preview mode).

I was able to replicate new events redirects hitting my Redirects plugin after creating a new event, but not with 100% consistency. Just so you have all the parameters I’m using, here’s how I was setting up the events:
    • Event Description
    • Category
    • Venue
    • Featured Image
    • Event Cost
    • Recurrence Description

It seems like new redirects are being created in my Redirection when a featured image is included in the mix. Sometimes I’ve been able to recreate that issue with just a featured image, and other times with a Featured Image + Recurrence Description, but neither with 100% consistency.

Hope this additional info helps your investigation. Enjoy your weekend!

    Good evening Sumaiya,

Thank you for the additional investigations.
    It is really helpful.

First of all I am really glad to hear that, for the most part, the issues are gone on your end.

I have been able to reproduce the preview issue on my end as well with a default WordPress theme, so there is a bug there.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

As such, I have opened a ticket for the bug.
Unfortunately, I cannot commit to a release date at this point. But stay tuned we will contact you as soon as the fix is out!

In regards to the redirections getting added, I was able to reproduce it on one of my installs. But unable to reproduce it consistently.
It seems like during the 4.2 install procedure, new rules are automatically added to the redirections row in wp_options.

However, I was not able to reproduce the addition of new rules after the upgrade.

I will need to investigate this further. On my personal install (and after a backup), I simply wiped out that row from the database to create a new one to make sure things ran smoothly.

    Have a great day!

    Good evening Sumaiya,

I ran a couple of tests to try to replicate the issue where new redirects are being created when adding featured images while creating events.
Unfortunately, I was not able to reproduce this issue.

At this point, your best options would be to apply my previous suggestion if you are comfortable with phpMyAdmin in wp_options (after a backup and after deactivating the redirection plugin temporarily)

I realize this is less than perfect since it means that you will have to recreate all of your redirections manually, but it should do it.

    Best regards,

    Geoff B.

    Hi Sumaiya!

I just wanted to share with you that a new release of our plugins is out, including a fix for the issue described by Geoff, where the time of a recurring event was not being displayed when previewing the event.

You can find out more about this release → https://theeventscalendar.com/maintenance-release-for-the-week-of-9-july-2018/

Please also note that we have subsequently shipped a hotfix for The Events Calendar, Events Calendar PRO and Event Tickets → https://theeventscalendar.com/announcing-the-events-calendar-4-6-20-1-events-calendar-pro-4-4-29-1-and-event-tickets-4-7-5-1/

We apologize for the long delay and appreciate your patience while we worked on this.

Please update the plugins and don’t hesitate to open a new topic if anything comes up.

    Best,
    Victor
