Hi,, when adding events, they are not appearing in event date order. This will be very confusing for users.

In List view they present in the correct order. But not in Photo view. (Changed to say ‘Grid View’ on my website)

    Hey John,

Sorry to hear about these issues!

    1. Can you post your site’s complete, un-edited “System Information” to this thread? That will help me investigate this problem a bit. Here is how to do that → https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/sharing-sys-info/

    2. Next, can you confirm how you changed “Photo View” to say “Grid View”? If you are using custom code, what specific custom code? (Paste the code into a Gist at http://gist.github.com and share a link to that Gist)

    Thank you!
    George

Ok, so I have spent quite a bit of time diagnosing this problem… I have (after deactivating all non events plugins) tried 2015 theme, Divi Theme (none child) and my Divi Chiled theme and had the same issue i.e. events in photo not displaying in the correct date order. But, here’s the thing ; the date orders were different in each view. i.e. in 2015 theme there were different date discrepancies than Divi and my Divi Child theme were different too (custom CSS added).. interesting huh?? so it is clearly an issue with the browser and sizing display. Just to add to the data for problem solving see the two attached files. They are snippets of the same view taken on my laptop; one uses Explorer, the other Chrome. Notice when viewed in Explorer the dates are sequenced correctly, but the same events are not sequenced correctly in Chrome. AND when the explorer view is moved to a 22″ display, the dates sequence incorrectly again (spooky huh!!)

So, the variable in all cases is the size of the photo view, which differs across 2015, Divi and my Divi Child theme (my child theme has custom coding to create an excerpt and fix the container height, hence the two Divi views are different). I think the issue is based around the sizing of the containers within browsers and different displays. This needs serious attention methinks. We are due to go live this weekend and this will halt the launch unless it can be fixed. Hope to hear from you quickly… many thanks

Thanks for digging into this and sharing your findings, John.

I do not notice any order issues in a default theme like Twenty Fifteen, Twenty Twelve, etc.

Can you share a screenshot of as much of the photo view as possible on your site when the Twenty Fifteen theme is activated? I am just curious to see the exact ordering issues there.

In the meantime, I would recommend raising this issue with your theme developer as well, as this seems to be theme-related in addition to plugin-involved…

I will keep my eye on this thread for the screenshots of Twenty Fifteen’s order discrepancies, and we can continue digging from there.

    Thank you!

    Hey John,

I forgot to mention this, but I wanted to note that I also saw that you’re using version 4.2.1 of both The Events Calendar and Events Calendar Pro.

Events Calendar Pro is now at version 4.2.2.1, and The Events Calendar at version 4.2.2. The Event Tickets plugin and Event Tickets Plus are also at 4.2.2 now.

I doubt the versions are a problem, per se, but it is worth ruling out as a possible culprit. Can you ensure that all of the plugins I mentioned above are up-to-date as I described above, too? After doing this, have a look at the photo view in the default theme of your choice (e.g. “Twenty Fifteen”), and share a screenshot of what you find in that theme after updating these plugins…

    Thank you!
    George

Hi, I can do this. But it would help if I knew the logic used by your plugin to determine the order of the events in Photoview. Here is the 2015 shot, you can see the vents are still not date synced. So how can this be a Divi theme issue?? 2015 image in next part of thread.

I just went through this same thing – here’s what I was told:

The Photo View uses jQuery Isotope to output the items in a Pinterest-type grid but not in a rigid row-column type grid.

Thanks Patti, that is interesting. So they are ignoring the fact that users of events websites are using a different viewing logic that anyone who uses Pinterest, who are searching for ‘image impact’ as opposed to ‘which events are on and when are they on?’ and will therefore want to read from left to right.

    Did you find a solution??

Not really. As I was finally able to understand it, the structure or layout is based on how the elements in the first row lay. So if you have different size “boxes” in the primary row, the shortest box is going to have the first item in the second row under it. And so on down the line.

I’m guessing your grid changes in different browsers because the font sizes vary just enough to make a difference between the two browsers to make it measure out differently. It will probably also change between Mac & Windows.

Looking at the isotope features, I don’t know if there is a way to make lay out in a more standard way without changing the layoutMode and that would take customizing to do. I’m assuming, I don’t know for certain. I honestly couldn’t afford to spend anymore time on it, didn’t want to take up anymore of their time, and just explained to my people it is what it is, sorry. :-/

thanks Patti, that makes sense. It would just have been nice to know this before I spent so much time styling it into a structured grid mode which is what the client wanted. I too have explained the situation to them and we will default to list view… it would have saved me huge amounts of time to be told this rather than just a standard ‘ it must be your theme’.

Well, 9 times out of 10, it’s the theme, so let’s cut support a break there. That’s why you have to check it in a standard theme first. Sometimes you have to be patient and step through the hoops to get to the answer. I know, it’s frustrating when you’ve got somebody breathing down your back for answers and you’re doing the online equivalent of “press 1 for support”, “press 2 if you’re clueless”, “press 3 if you want to tear your hair out”. 😉

whatdayknow… fixed it !!!! … many thanks for that info Patti….. once I read the isotope article.. it made me think about the container sizes.. now I had created a style to fix the height of the containers.. BUT one of the images on the first row of the grid had been added in by my client at 3px greater than the specification I had given her i.e 300×200 and she had sized the image 303×200…. so this event in the primary row created the problem. I changed the image .. and presto… all in order now…..

where can I send the flowers???

None needed because you just answered a question I had posed – if you make the images / text consistent, would it fix the problem. I haven’t had time to find out for myself. Guessing that’s what I’ll be doing this weekend… Thanks for the info!
