ParticipantWe ran into severe problems with Events Calendar PRO on our website yesterday, bringing the site down every time our content database was restarted. My server admin tells us “the low log for the database is filling up with queries against the calendar database tables.”
We think this is due to the calendar re-querying venue information with Google Maps?
The site has improved and become stable when we deactivated/removed PRO from our multisite environment, we are now only using the free version of the plugin.
Are there known issues with database performance with events calendar PRO and multisite environments with ~500 sites? We have the calendar network activated, and some sites have been using this product for years now, accumulating thousands of events and venues.
If we cannot use Events Calendar PRO without performance issues, is there a way to isolate the recurring event and custom field aspects of PRO without activating any Google Map features at all?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

ParticipantDo I need to provide more information? We are currently running without Events Calendar PRO due to this issue and we need to get the recurring event feature back in place ASAP.

MemberHi There!
Thanks for reaching out to us!
Just wanted to let you know that we are dealing with a high volume of threads at the moment and it may take us more than usual to get back to you.
In the meantime, if you are dealing with an issue, please make sure you have gone through our Testing for Conflicts Guide > https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/testing-for-conflicts/ and let us know if any difference under those conditions.
Also please provide as much information about the issue as possible and share links and screenshots so we can have as reference.
Finally, don’t forget to share your complete system information information by following the steps in this guide > https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/sharing-sys-info/
For your specific issue. we have a great article that will get you started on Performance Considerations you should know about. After that, if you decide to implement a caching system then you can move to these articles: Caching: What, when and how and Caching month view HTML in transients
Finally, there is a good article George put up here that groups a set of developer plugins. It’s a bit more technical than the others but will definitely be of help if you are into development.
We appreciate your patience while we slowly get back to normal response times.
Best,

ParticipantWe have read the materials you linked to, the caching discussion appears geared toward sites that don’t leverage the event calendar to the extent we do.
For example, our home page umaine.edu lists events from calendar.umaine.edu in the ‘event highlights’ category; there are many such areas of our site where events from calendar.umaine.edu or any other site on our multisite network can be listed on any other site. Caching this would take an enormous amount of resources I think.
Are there any tools or commands that can be used to clean up the event calendar data? For example, deleting all events where the end date was more than 12 months ago, or —even better— a way to delete all venues that are not currently in use?
I single out the venues because what appears to have happened is that the venues in the system are querying Google Maps API on the back end, and when those number in the thousands it is bringing our server down.
I can put you in direct touch with my system administrator, he can share more about our specific hardware setup and what he is seeing in the logs.

MemberThanks for the update.
You could try totally removing the geolocation API call:
add_filter( 'tribe_events_pro_geocode_request_url', '__return_empty_string' );If that doesn’t work (or maybe even if it does help improve), you might try changing one of these (or both) at wp-admin > Events > Settings > General tab:
- “Clean up recurring events after”
- “Create recurring events in advance for”
Please let me know what you find out.

ParticipantHi again,
We added this to our site, but when we restored the PRO plugin the database was hammered again. Attached is a sample query of what’s eating up resources.

ParticipantMy server admin says “we’re down to a very small number of active processes now. The database seems to be keeping up at this point, but I’m afraid what will happen when we get a boost in traffic (say a siteimprove/monsido scan).”
