Hi, our entire events calendar page is not displaying. Instead it is just a white screen.

    http://www.epicenter-sf.org/events/

I noticed on a previous thread from 2015 that Modern Tribe advised someone with a similar problem to change the event url, noting that the word “event(s)” can’t be used as a page. That seems to be how ours was configured but have never had this problem. I tried saving and re-saving the settings as was advised in that thread and it has not resolved the issue.

Over the last few days, we’ve noticed many 404 error messages when attempting to publish events. largely inconvenient as it requires us to go find the event to see if it was published. often, only part of the data is saved. We’ve tried saving drafts of events before publishing but are encountering similar 404 messages. Sometimes simply clicking on the ‘Edit Events’ will send us to a 404. Please advise.

Good evening Fernando and welcome back!

Thank you for reaching out to us.

We are sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with the display of several calendar pages.
I would love to help you with this topic.

I noticed on a previous thread from 2015 that Modern Tribe advised someone with a similar problem to change the event url, noting that the word “event(s)” can’t be used as a page. That seems to be how ours was configured

You are 100% right, for things to work properly, there are a couple of rules:

    1. Whatever slugs you select for Events URL slug and Single event URL slug, these slugs have to be reserved exclusively for the calendar. In other words, there can’t be a page or an post category that uses those slugs.
    2. The Events URL slug and the Single event URL slug have to be different from one another. They can’t be the same.

I would also recommend changing the settings for Events Template in Events -> Settings -> Display and then re-saving your permalinks.

Finally I would recommend going through the following article to tackle the 404 errors: https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/fixing-http-404-errors/

Let me know how that goes.

    Best regards,
    Geoff B.

Hi Geoff, I’ve gone through with the two steps you recommended. I changed the Event URL slugs to read ‘happenings’ and ‘single’ for single events. I went back and saved permalinks etc. We are still having the same issue.

As you can see here: http://www.epicenter-sf.org/happenings/ we only arrive at a blank white page.

Another thing I do not understand is that we had the slugs reading ‘events’ and ‘event’ for over one year with no issue and suddenly that is prohibited.

    Please advise asap.

    Thank you,

    Fernando

    Good afternoon Fernando,

    Thank you for writing back.
I am sorry that your events page is still not working at this point.

I believe I have miscommunicated what I was trying to say. You CAN use the words “events” and “event”.
You just have to make sure that:

    1. There is no “real page” that has those slugs
    2. The Events URL slug and the Single event URL slug have to be different from one another.

Did you also change the settings for Events Template in Events -> Settings -> Display and then re-saving your permalinks ?

Finally, could you tell me if that issue persists if you very temporarily switch back to a default WordPress theme such as twenty-fifteen.

If that still does not work, the next step is to go through our testing for conflicts procedure (preferably in a staging/dev environment or local install of your WordPress website) and let us know what you find out.

Basically the goal here is to revert back to a bare WordPress installation to see if the problem persists. It also allows us to pinpoint what the cause of the issue is.

Let me know how that goes and hang in there as we are trying to figure out why the calendar page does not appear properly on your site.

    Best regards,
    Geoff B.

Hi David, if you look at our homepage, http://www.epicenter-sf.org you’ll see that there is an Events tab. This is how it has been configured for over a year. The Events tab is not listed as a page, but i wonder if this is part of the issue.
My question remains though, why would this stop working suddenly?

I did save the permalinks and change the settings and re saved.

Please advise. I’m hoping to get some one with more know-how as I’m not the person to be tinkering too much with the back end of the site.

Appreciate your understanding and any more info. There seem to be a lot of problems popping up after updates throughout the year. At least too many to be happy with. Would you recommend not updating?

    Thanks,

    Fernando

    Good afternoon Fernando,

Thank you for writing back to us and for providing more precisions on your current setup.

If you look at our homepage, http://www.epicenter-sf.org you’ll see that there is an Events tab. This is how it has been configured for over a year. The Events tab is not listed as a page, but i wonder if this is part of the issue. My question remains though, why would this stop working suddenly?

That is possible. To make sure, I would need a screenshot of your settings in the WP Dashboard under Appearance > Menus (where the tabs / menus are defined).

I am not sure why exactly your site has stopped working suddenly. It could be a number of things:

    • WordPress update
    • Plugin update
    • WordPress theme update
    • Some other reason

In each of these cases, there are a number of things that can go not as smoothly as you would expect.

This is why, my main goal is to pinpoint the issue (hence my suggestion of running the tests).

Please advise. I’m hoping to get some one with more know-how as I’m not the person to be tinkering too much with the back end of the site.

I can appreciate that and I certainly do not want to be asking you to do things that you are not comfortable with.

Ideally, the sooner we can go through the testing for conflicts procedure, the faster we can resolve this.

One quick test that is not too involved is to very temporarily switch back to a default WordPress theme such as twenty-fifteen under Appearance > Themes and see if the problem persist.

There seem to be a lot of problems popping up after updates throughout the year. At least too many to be happy with. Would you recommend not updating?

You are right, at Modern Tribe, we really don’t like bugs either! We do apologize for the inconvenience this might have been causing so far.

As such, we are constantly trying to improve both our code and our Quality Assurance Program, thank to valuable feedback from great customers such as yourselves.

When it comes to any updates ( WordPress, plugins, themes, etc…), I highly recommend testing the updates in a staging /test / local environment first. Based on my experience from the last 10 years as WordPress specialist, I always recommend that to all of our customers.

In fact, I also ensure I do the same for any of my updates.

If you are interested, I could point you (or whoever is helping you out with your site) towards some very helpful reading on that topic.

Hang tight as we work together on solving your current issue.

    Best regards,

    Geoff B.

Hi Geoff, Wanted to offer an update and see if you had any thoughts. My wordpress expert changed the setting to display the day view only and that allows the calendar to populate. Note that the it only displays the current day. No matter what day we look at. This has been an ongoing issue with the calendar for the last year.

The calendar will still not display the month view. Currently we have about 5600 events loaded, with settings removing events after one month and populating one month in advance.

Should the amount of events be a problem? Seems it should not.

    Below are some screenshots

    Thanks,

    Fernando

    Good evening Fernando,

Thank you for writing back with an update and thank you for the screenshots.

That allows me to answer your earlier question: the Events tab should not have any negative impact on the calendar displaying or not.

My wordpress expert changed the setting to display the day view only and that allows the calendar to populate. Note that the it only displays the current day. No matter what day we look at. This has been an ongoing issue with the calendar for the last year.

Based on that fact, could you please send me a copy of your WordPress theme / child theme in a .zip file link (via Dropbox or Google Drive) so that I can run some tests on my end ?

The calendar will still not display the month view. Currently we have about 5600 events loaded, with settings removing events after one month and populating one month in advance.

I believe that this might be related to the issue at hand (the creating recurring events one month in advance part). Not that there is anything wrong with that setting of course.

You see, when we released the Events Calendar Pro 4.2.2 , there was a glitch associated with recurring events that creeped in there.

We were made aware of that on Friday and we released 4.2.2.1 to patch that specific issue. I recommend updating Pro as a first step.

Secondly, in the process, and provided your large number of events, I highly recommend asking your WordPress expert to add the following snippet to your theme’s or child theme’s functions.php file : https://git.io/vKl0q

This will clean any recurring event issue that might have been generated by the glitch in the update.

Should the amount of events be a problem? Seems it should not.

You are absolutely right, the number of events should not be an issue provided your web server is decent (and that it did work very nicely up to recently).

But, since you have a lot of events and that you want to be using the month view, I would recommend asking your expert to add the following snippet to your theme’s or child theme’s functions.php file : https://git.io/vKl8t

Basically, that should speed up your month view display.

Let me know how that goes.

Best regards and thank you for your patience and understanding,
    Geoff B.
