is there a way to display the selected category above the grid or list? meaning if i were to use a link to a concerts category domain.com.com/events/category/concerts/ above the calendar or event list it would show Concerts.
thanks
Sean
August 1, 2012 at 5:58 pm #23082RobMemberHey Sean. Would using the “Add HTML Before” option in Events -> Settings accomplish this? That certainly seems the most straightforward route but let me know if I’ve misunderstood what you’re going for here.
August 1, 2012 at 9:19 pm #23109SeanParticipantthanks rob, i think i may have a another issue, i emailed pro@ with a complete description of the issue, it seems the title or breadcrumb does not always show when linking to a category grid view. by title i am referring to “Calendar of Events › CATEGORY” that normally shows at the top.

August 2, 2012 at 12:18 pm #23137RobMemberSean: gotcha; I am seeing that email there and apologies we haven’t hit it yet. (We’ve been a bit backlogged this week as I’ve been the only member of the support team not on vacation). I’ve got the ticket over to Joyce from our team and she’ll be responding later this afternoon to help flush this out for you.
We’ll take the information you sent over via email and will keep it behind-the-scenes as context, but will respond to you in the thread here so the discussion is best tracked in one place. Thanks for your patience so far.
August 3, 2012 at 4:41 pm #23210SeanParticipantHi Sean,
Can you copy and paste all this to the forum and send me the link to the forum post?
It sounds like this is a theme issue if the default template works. So there is something missing in the template you are using that is not compatible with the Events Calendar. We need to narrow this down, but to do so, I really need a link for the devs to help us out.
Thanks!
Joyce

Joyce,
i am not sure how to move all of this to the forum but i would be glad to…
here are my results, the only thing that made a difference was using the default events template, but this is not an option as they have ads that run and are displayed in the right column.
i dont have a staging environment for newlife919.com but i am working on a site for their sister station and since it is not live we can test there.
i uploaded the plugins to this site and added some events in different categories and the results were the same. (they will be purchasing a license but they are not to a point where they are ready for the calendar)
take a look at this.
has title

does not have title

Answers to your questions.
You’re running the latest version of WordPress.
3.4.1
You’re running the latest version of the Events plugin (2.0.8) and the Events PRO plugin (2.0.8 again).
both are 2.0.8 and The Events Calendar: Community Events 1.0.2
It could be a permalinks-related issue. Resave your permalinks page to reset them. If you have permalinks turned off, turn them on with a structure like /%postname%/.
reset, turned off turned on and using /%postname%/
Switch to a different templating option under Settings — The Events Calendar, using the dropdown. See if this improves the situation.
works using the default events template, but they need to use the default page template to display a column
Try the plugin deactivation route: deactivate your other plugins one-by-one, until just The Events Calendar/PRO are active, to see if it’s a conflict on that end.
deactivated all plugins except for events
If that doesn’t do the trick, is there a staging environment where you can test all plugins off (except Events) AND reverting to the default Twenty Eleven theme? I do need to know if this happens on the Twenty Eleven theme.
tried all of the above in 2011 (also the latest version of 2011) and had the same results.Sean
______________________________________Hi Sean,
Thanks for reaching out, and sorry to hear you’re having issues. This does look like an interesting problem and I’d be happy to help best I can. I will need you to post this to the Tribe forums, though I do see it was helpful to get some screenshots. You can use an app like Droplr on the forums to help us see some screenshots of what you are trying to achieve versus what is there already.
To be able to help you fast and as best as I can on the forums, I will need you to confirm the following:You’re running the latest version of WordPress.

While we can definitely keep helping you out here should the suggestions above not do the trick, would you mind bringing this discussion to the PRO forums at tri.be specifically, https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/forum/events/events-calendar-pro/)? That is where we handle all support related to these plugins and ensures we can get our users responses in as timely a fashion as possible. It would allow me to bring in a dev if needed, and would help other users who encounter this same issue down the road.
Thanks again for your support,

my client is trying to create some links directly to the calendar so it will only display events from a specific category,
http://www.newlife919.com/events/category/newlife/
this seems to work fine, the problem comes in is with the breadcrumb or title, sometimes it is there sometimes it is not.
the link above should show like so as it is a link the the NewLife Category.
if you navigate to the next month this stays, but some times when they manually create a link the title is not displayed,
the way i have been able to duplicate it is add 2102-08 to the link above in the url and the title vanishes.
i thought it was due to the trailing slash, 2102-08/ but this does not seem to make a difference, sometimes the slash is there some times not
what it looks like to me is if you start from
http://www.newlife919.com/events/category/newlife/
the above link has a title with the category but if you use the following as a starting point the title vanishes.
http://www.newlife919.com/events/category/newlife/2102-08
ultimately what they would like is it to just show the category as the title for the page.
i am stumped!

August 3, 2012 at 4:50 pm #23212SeanParticipantJoyce,
the default page template does not work correctly in either my theme or 2011, and by that i mean going to Events -> Settings -> Templates and changing from Default Page Template to Default Events Template will show the header “Calendar of Events › Concert Calendar” and “Calendar of Events › Community Events Calendar”when i change back to Default Page Template, “Calendar of Events › Community Events Calendar” does not show when changing between categories and sometimes Calendar of Events › Concert Calendar” does not show but i cant find a reason.
Sean
August 3, 2012 at 4:52 pm #23213SeanParticipanti will leave the template set to 2011 so you can see what i mean.

August 4, 2012 at 12:54 am #23226Joyce GraceMemberHi Sean, I see what you are saying. I have tested this on my own site and I get the same results. This is something that needs to be customized with your theme. I am going to do my best to find another solution, and hopefully see if our devs can help, but in the interim, you may need to do some coding work to get the titles to appear.
Category view is controlled by the list.php file (which also controls the broader list itself). If you make a copy of this file in a new ‘events’ folder in your theme directory, then modify that file instead of the one in the core plugin, your changes will not be overwritten next time there is an update to the plugin.
Our full themer’s guide is here: https://theeventscalendar.com/themers-guide-to-the-events-calendar/
Our documentation page is here: https://theeventscalendar.com/support/documentation
Also, while you may not be using the Genesis framework, this tutorial on how to integrate the Genesis themes with our plugin is very insightful and the principles can apply to any theme: https://theeventscalendar.com/tutorial-integrating-the-events-calendar-w-genesis/
I am still going to have a look through the forums to find more solutions for you.
August 4, 2012 at 1:10 am #23227Joyce GraceMemberHello Sean, I did a lot of digging around and it really is theme dependent – different themes react differently to the calendar when using the default page template.
However, this thread may be of use to you: https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/category-title/#post-22003
I’m still going to find out if our devs know more.
Thanks for your patience!
August 4, 2012 at 1:10 am #23228Joyce GraceMemberAlso this is not exactly the same issue, but may shed light on what to do to customize your title area:
https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/calendar-page-title-shows-title-of-an-event-and-wont-change/#post-19270August 4, 2012 at 9:33 am #23246SeanParticipantgood to know i am not crazy… i will look at these suggestions and report back with any developments. i did notice every thing works fine when Event List is selected either by default or switching views when the calendar is shown.
August 4, 2012 at 2:23 pm #23251SeanParticipantwell i think i can put part of this to rest…. if there are no events in the grid, the title does not show, that accounts for the “sometimes there sometimes not” mystery. now to find out how to pass the category to $title even if there are no events displayed.

August 6, 2012 at 12:46 am #23285Joyce GraceMemberVery interesting, thanks Sean! Do keep us updated! The dev team has been notified of it as well, so I’ll let you know if they say anything.
August 7, 2012 at 2:22 am #23340Joyce GraceMemberI was also given this solution: https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/category-title/#post-21971 – can you give that a go and let me know if it works for you?
August 7, 2012 at 10:05 pm #23405SeanParticipanti believe you sent me this earlier and i did try it, and just now again, the_title() is in my functions.php file.
the reason seems to be if there are no events to display in the category then $title is empty so the_title() does not have anything to display. -
