Hi Jennifer, I have (at last!) a workaround for the iCal export issue in the other ticket I referenced, and it works well enough while waiting for a permanent fix from the dev team. This means you’re off the hook, and I’ll close this redundant ticket. Thanks again for being willing to pitch in if necessary, and glad the rest of the crew was able to save us both the trouble. Take care and have a great weekend. . .

FYI this seems to be on its way to a resolution: the support guys I was working with in the other convo identified a bug and passed it along to the dev team. Not sure how quickly there’ll be a fix, but it sounds like it’s out of my hands and just needs to chug through the process. Just in case, I’d still love it if we could keep this thread open until it’s 100% solved. . . but I’m optimistic there’ll be a favorable resolution with no further action from either of us! Thanks for being willing to help, and I’ll post again in the unlikely event that the other convo turns into a dead end.

That sounds like the perfect plan. . . hopefully I’ll have a resolution via
the other tech within three weeks. If not, I’ll let you know. Thanks again
    for your responsiveness!

Hi Jennifer, and thanks for getting back to me with this thoughtful note. I’m really encouraged that you took the time to find my old ticket, and the insight that the calendar wasn’t actually blank but just not starting until 2020 is a useful clue. . . already a big improvement over the first round!

FYI, I submitted a new ticket around the same time I replied to you, and it looks like “Andras” is on the job. I don’t want you to have to double up your efforts, so would you mind keeping this ticket open for now, and if I find a resolution in the other convo, I’ll close this one to let you know you’re off the hook. I’m optimistic about that exchange too (Andras also noticed the 2020 events) but because my first attempt went nowhere, and you seem skilled and dedicated, I’d really appreciate it if I could keep this line of commmunication open as a Plan C, just in case. Cool?

Thanks so much for this speedy fix, which I greatly appreciate. I have one other unresolved issue that also got buried as a “theme conflict” and never properly investigated. Maybe it was just a bad support staffer, since both tickets were handled by the same person. In any case, since this widget fix was clearly a routine fix for Tribe, and once the problem was identified, it got quickly sent to the dev team and handled with impressive competence, I’m wondering if you have any advice on how to get my other issue handled the same way. In other words, what can I do to persuade Support that there’s a real problem on your end?

My other issue is on the same website, so it uses the same Tribe-approved theme, and every indication I can see points to a problem with Tribe code. The previous tech gave me the usual “try disabling all plugins” script and was completely uninterested in looking at the actual problem. The breakthrough in this case seems to have been to contact the theme developer and get him to send a screenshot of a javascript error. . . must I always have the burden of proving there’s a problem? I’m not a programmer, which is why I buy plugins like The Events Calendar Pro, but I’m guessing the .js error would be obvious at a glance if an experienced tech from Tribe were to look at the issue, and the problem was that nobody bothered. I very much appreciate the speed and competence with which you handled this issue, and I’d be grateful for any insights you may have about getting my next ticket dealt with when I resubmit the other issue.

This had no apparent effect. I purged cache at Cloudflare, on the server, and in my browser. What next?

The link you provide to ThemeForest’s list of compatible themes includes Total, the theme I’m using for this site. This suggests that theme compatibility isn’t the issue. If I sort by best-selling themes, Total is fourth on the list, so it’s obviously very widely used and the them is likely not inherently the problem by itself. Indeed, I’d evaluated EC Pro years ago and decided not to use it. . . then decided to give it a second look because the Total developer recommended it on a private Slack board for some of his most active users.

You seem quick to conclude it’s a theme conflict, but I think there’s a lot of evidence that it’s not, which is why I’d be grateful if there’s any way you can run tests in a staging site that replicates the live environment. You surely have more experience and better tools than I do to narrow down a viable approach to solving this issue, so resorting too quickly to the ol’ reliable “theme conflict, not our problem” resolution doesn’t really serve anyone except crossing things off your ticket queue. I’d really appreciate any insights you’d provide that are specific and useful and not just the basic “check to make sure your computer is turned on” type suggestions.

The Export feature doesn’t work on the production site, but it also doesn’t work on my staging site found here:

    https://staging1.region1hmcc.org/region1hmcc-event-calendar/

This isn’t a “fresh install” of WordPress, but it is a current version of WP with the 2017 theme and all non-Tribe plugins disabled. I don’t see the difference/benefit of setting up a brand new instance of WordPress, but if you can explain why that’d be useful, I’ll give it a shot. I imagine you’re probably going to say something about having a control instance on the server so we can narrow down possible issues, but let me give you some additional background to persuade you that it’d be better to work with the live site (ideally) or a staging site (as a last resort):

    1. I need to make the calendar work on this site on this server. the client has spent a lot of money for me to customize the site using a particular server and theme. with many thousands of dollars invested in this setup, they’ll surely abandon EC Pro before they say “oh, we’ll just start over from scratch with a new theme and cross our fingers that that one doesn’t also have the same problem once we’ve spent thousands of additional dollars.” surely you can understand this perspective.

    2. I’ve used this theme (Total) and server (SiteGround) many many times with all kinds of plugins and customizations, and I’ve never experienced a conflict before between this theme and any widely-used plugin. Actually I haven’t had conflicts with ANY plugin, even obscure semi-wonky ones. Since I have two open tickets with EC Pro (you are handling both of them) and both of them seem to be heading toward “our plugin works fine, it’s a conflict with your theme/server/etc.” it leads me to believe that Tribe isn’t making very much of an effort to support the plugin. although I’m sympathetic to developers not being able to spend lots of time troubleshooting conflicts with every conceivable theme/plugin scenario (obvs), in my experience most of the widely-used and highly-regarded plugins make at least SOME effort to provide insights, approaches, and/or workarounds.

Keep in mind that the people using WordPress and plugins like this tend to be “designers” not “developers” so the whole reason we’re using the platform is to minimize troubleshooting at the code level and use things that Just Work. If I were using some obscure theme that hadn’t been updated since 2012, that’d be one thing, but Total has some 34,000 sales on ThemeForest, and the dev has a reputation for an outstanding record following WP best practices and making clean, well-optimized code. This isn’t my first time using EC, but it’s the first one where I’ve pushed the envelope a little with EC Pro and Community Events enhancements. . . so far, barring new breakthroughs, it feels like the Tribe calendar plugin is buggy and unreliable. I have a high level of confidence in the other tools I’m using on this site, so when EC Pro has multiple issues, what else should I conclude? Hoping your support will help change my mind, as on paper at least there seems to be a lot to like about this suite of plugins.

Also to clarify the above update:

    1. this is on the PRODUCTION site, not the staging site, so if you want to check it out yourself, go here:

    Event Calendar

    2. now that this bug has appeared, I see the debug.log file has been created in /wp-content/

Update: having just fixed a *different* EC Pro related issue, I went back to the Export Events and tried it again. This time, I got a massive report onscreen. Not sure what to make of it, but here it is:

Hi Sky, and thanks for the positive reinforcement w/r/t my username 😉

I can’t use the Tribe Bar for this client’s site, but I re-enabled it via shortcode and then immediately hid it with CSS, and the problem went away. Boom, solved! Ironically, I’d done this exact thing during development, but then I noticed it was possible to hide the bar via shortcode parameter, so I did it that way. I usually prefer to use the plugin as recommended via docs instead of doing hacky things like CSS hiding!

In this case, CSS is fine pending the release of a code fix whenever it comes along via plugin update. Thanks for the suggestion!
