Hi, I’m testing the Export Events feature on a newly launched site, and it looks like it’s exporting an .ics file with all the event data. However, when I try to import it into Google Calendar or Outlook, a new calendar is created but it doesn’t contain any events. I don’t get an error message in either application, and the Goog shows a dialog on import that says “30 of 30 events processed.”

I’ve uploaded a copy of the .ics file I downloaded, and you can get one for yourself here: https://region1hmcc.org/region1hmcc-event-calendar/

Seems like a pretty straightforward feature, but it just ain’t working. I’d appreciate any insights you may be able to share. . .

    Hi William,

Thanks so much for reaching out!

I do see the issue occurring on your site, however I am unable to replicate on my site, as when I try this functionality, it works as expected.

With that in mind, as a first step, let’s try to rule out if there is some type of conflict at play.
    This is usually because of:

    • A conflict with another plugin
    • A conflict with your WordPress theme
    • A template customization for the Events Calendar that requires updating

When it comes to that type of issue, it is preferable to troubleshoot in a staging environment if you have one.

A first quick test is to simply temporarily revert back to a default WordPress theme such as twenty-sixteen to see if the issue persists.

The next step would be to go through our testing for conflicts procedure and let us know what you find out.

Basically the goal here is to revert back to a bare WordPress installation to see if the problem persists. It also allows us to pinpoint what the cause of the issue is.

But, before you do that, there are 2 things I would advise:

    • Make a backup of your database
    • Consider activating a “Maintenance Page” plugin if you are doing this on your live site (to minimize impact on your visitors)

Let me know how that goes!

    Thanks,

    Jaime

I’ve tried all that you’ve suggested above, and the issue persists. Here’s a link to the staging site so you can see for yourself:

    https://staging1.region1hmcc.org/region1hmcc-event-calendar/

Note that there is one plugin active on this staging site that’s not a Tribe/EC plugin: but it’s just a tool that connects to the SiteGround server that allows me to clear cached files without having to log into cPanel. FWIW I even disabled this one before sending this reply, but just to avoid confusion, I’m noting that I have reactivated this one, which for obvious reasons, seems like a low-risk plugin for the issue we’re talking about.

    Hi William,

Thanks for providing me with this information.

I can replicate this issue using your site, however I’m not able to replicate the functionality on my own test site.

Can you please enable WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG and share any debug messages you see?

Let me know if you have any other questions in the meantime!

    Thanks,

    Jaime

Hi, I’ve enabled both wp_debug and wp_debug_log but have no experience with them, so I’m not sure what to look for. I tried these things but don’t notice anything that seems relevant:

    – enabled both debug/log functions above
    – looked on the front end and in the admin controls for any alerts or messages
    – went to the Event Calendar page and clicked the “Export Events” button, and looked for any alerts or messages onscreen. . . didn’t see any
    – looked in the /wp-content/ directory for a debug.log file and didn’t see one

Is there anything I’m missing here, or does the lack of onscreen errors and/or log file mean there are no warnings to report?

Update: having just fixed a *different* EC Pro related issue, I went back to the Export Events and tried it again. This time, I got a massive report onscreen. Not sure what to make of it, but here it is:

Also to clarify the above update:

    1. this is on the PRODUCTION site, not the staging site, so if you want to check it out yourself, go here:

    Event Calendar

    2. now that this bug has appeared, I see the debug.log file has been created in /wp-content/

    Hi William,

Thanks for providing me with that information.

Can you try deactivating the Category Color plugin temporarily and see if the export works after doing so?

Let me know how that goes!

    Thanks,

    Jaime

I tried deactivating Category Color, and the export still didn’t work. What next?

    #1597797

    Hi William,

Thanks for giving that a try.  I do see this issue happening on your site still, and I still cannot replicate that issue on my own test site.

With that being said, can you try to create a fresh WordPress install and see if the export feature works then?

Let me know how that goes and if you have any other questions in the meantime!

    Thanks,

    Jaime

The Export feature doesn’t work on the production site, but it also doesn’t work on my staging site found here:

    https://staging1.region1hmcc.org/region1hmcc-event-calendar/

This isn’t a “fresh install” of WordPress, but it is a current version of WP with the 2017 theme and all non-Tribe plugins disabled. I don’t see the difference/benefit of setting up a brand new instance of WordPress, but if you can explain why that’d be useful, I’ll give it a shot. I imagine you’re probably going to say something about having a control instance on the server so we can narrow down possible issues, but let me give you some additional background to persuade you that it’d be better to work with the live site (ideally) or a staging site (as a last resort):

    1. I need to make the calendar work on this site on this server. the client has spent a lot of money for me to customize the site using a particular server and theme. with many thousands of dollars invested in this setup, they’ll surely abandon EC Pro before they say “oh, we’ll just start over from scratch with a new theme and cross our fingers that that one doesn’t also have the same problem once we’ve spent thousands of additional dollars.” surely you can understand this perspective.

    2. I’ve used this theme (Total) and server (SiteGround) many many times with all kinds of plugins and customizations, and I’ve never experienced a conflict before between this theme and any widely-used plugin. Actually I haven’t had conflicts with ANY plugin, even obscure semi-wonky ones. Since I have two open tickets with EC Pro (you are handling both of them) and both of them seem to be heading toward “our plugin works fine, it’s a conflict with your theme/server/etc.” it leads me to believe that Tribe isn’t making very much of an effort to support the plugin. although I’m sympathetic to developers not being able to spend lots of time troubleshooting conflicts with every conceivable theme/plugin scenario (obvs), in my experience most of the widely-used and highly-regarded plugins make at least SOME effort to provide insights, approaches, and/or workarounds.

Keep in mind that the people using WordPress and plugins like this tend to be “designers” not “developers” so the whole reason we’re using the platform is to minimize troubleshooting at the code level and use things that Just Work. If I were using some obscure theme that hadn’t been updated since 2012, that’d be one thing, but Total has some 34,000 sales on ThemeForest, and the dev has a reputation for an outstanding record following WP best practices and making clean, well-optimized code. This isn’t my first time using EC, but it’s the first one where I’ve pushed the envelope a little with EC Pro and Community Events enhancements. . . so far, barring new breakthroughs, it feels like the Tribe calendar plugin is buggy and unreliable. I have a high level of confidence in the other tools I’m using on this site, so when EC Pro has multiple issues, what else should I conclude? Hoping your support will help change my mind, as on paper at least there seems to be a lot to like about this suite of plugins.

    Hi William,

    Thank you for your response.

I asked for a fresh WordPress install because I could not replicate the issue on my own test site, with a bare install, and since you have customizations and other factors that can cause issues on your site, I thought it would be worth it to see if you experience the same issue without any other factors present.

    Let me know your thoughts!

    Thanks,

    Jaime
