One way is to organize your posts into classroom categories and let parents subscribe to the classroom categories, they can be informed of updates via RSS to Email.

Then you use a dynamic sidebar solution like woo sidebar (http://wordpress.org/plugins/woosidebars/), and follow the suggestion of Leah to organize events into classroom categories too. This way, each classroom post will display their associating calendar events in the sidebar.

Whenever there is a new classroom-specific event, just create a new post to briefly talk about the event and put it in the correct classroom category. In this way, parents who subscribed to the classroom category will be notified of the event. When they visit the post from the email, they will see the class-specific events in the sidebar.

Here’s a tutorial on how to allow users to subscribe to categories in wordpress

An alternative solution is to display your “context-sensitive” calendar into the sidebar. You can use dynamic menu plugins to achieve that such as woo sidebar

    WooSidebars

Basically it allows you to create different sidebars for different pages. you can then configure the calendar widget’s category in the different sidebars

Alternatively you can create a ticket type for each time slot, each ticket type will have its own inventory of say 25

Therefore if you have 4 time slots a day, you can create one event with 4 ticket types.

    Hi Barry,
Since we are not expecting event-level inventory in ver 2, can point out where to make changes? I am thinking of storing both the overall ticket available and total tickets sold into two custom fields of the event, which part of the code should I look at which I could have access to the number of tickets customer bought (regardless of ticket type) and then add to event-level total tickets sold field?
