I’m sorry you’re running into an issue with the venues and organizers! To clarify, are you not able to add them to the event, or are you not seeing links for them on the front end as mentioned in the thread you linked to?
If you are referring to not seeing links to the venue/organizer pages, this is because they are actually a feature of Events Calendar Pro. So, the venues and organizers will not be linked on the front end without Pro being active.
If you are not able to add them to events at all, then the first step here would be to test for conflicts with your theme and other plugins. The free WP Staging plugin will let you create a quick copy of your live site that you can use for testing if you do not have a testing site already.

ParticipantI can no longer add them to new events. The fields are there in Settings, but when I am adding a new event, I no longer have the drop-downs that allow me to select the venue or the organizer. See how in this screenshot the fields are there, but I cannot do anything with them. Any ideas?

Were you able to find anything in your conflict testing? Since this occurred after updating, it’s possible that the latest versions are conflicting with something else on your site. If you haven’t done this yet, please make sure that you have enabled WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG (which will create a file on your server at /wp-content/debug.log if there are any WP_DEBUG messages) and share any debug messages you see while trying to replicate this issue. Can you also check for Javascript errors on that page by right-clicking on the page, clicking “Inspect” and “Console”?
