I would like to have the option to group different users of the community calendar into groups with different sets of permissions for each group . Possible?

Unfortunately the feature yo mention is not included in Community Events. But the users registered via Community Events are standard WordPress users, so you can edit their roles and capabilities and then via custom code limit or expand the fields or options available in the form.
