ParticipantHi there-
All of a sudden, when we are creating new events, we can publish them and they show oup on the calendar views, but when you go to click on the event for more information, it says “page not found” Can you help me figure out what’s going on?Link is included below, thanks

ParticipantJust to add – the first “Stars at Dawn” reading group event that shows up on the page (without a featured image) seems to work, but the rest of the events on the page do not. I noticed the permalink structure seems to be different on them – any events that display the date in the permalink work, and the new ones created don’t display the date in the permalink, and do not work. I have not made any changes to the permalink settings (I just emailed my client to make sure that they didn’t either) I’ve read a few posts about permalinks being a problem. I tried going to the permalink settings page and hitting “Save Changes” without actually doing anything which is what a few posts had said to try, but it didn’t fix anything..

ParticipantHowdy Stuart,
I would love to help you with this.
Thank you for so thoroughly testing this. I am happy to hear you have not made any permalink changes, and that you already tried pressing save changes. That is good to know!
Permalinks are one of those most finicky aspects of WordPress. It’s just very easy for one plugin or theme to accidentally break things for another. In light of this, would you mind trying a conflict test? This guide walks you through how to test for a conflict, and then identify what is conflicting. If this is a conflict, and you can narrow down what’s conflicting by using that guide, then it is probable we can find a simple solution to this.
If you have tried the above, and no conflict was found, then we are going to have try some more in depth debugging. First, would you mind carefully following the steps in this article in order: Troubleshooting 404 Page Not Found error. You have already done some of them to an extent, but if you don’t mind redoing everything except the conflict test, and following each of the tiny little suggestions such as clearing your browser cache, it will be tremendously helpful.
Does that all make sense?
Cheers!

ParticipantBefore I run through these steps, if I switch over to the Twenty Sixteen theme and then switch back to my current theme, will I lose any customizations I have done to my current theme? Or lose any data associated with the plugins I am using?

ParticipantThat’s a good question Stewart. In 99% of cases, no. But, there are some outlier themes that store their settings in an odd way, and for whatever reason won’t restore them when you switch back. This is the reason why it is recommended you backup your site first.
Does your website host have a backup and restore utility? Most all of them do. They allow you to take a snapshot of the website exactly as it is now, and at the press of a button you can later restore it. Perhaps you could look into this before doing the conflict test?

ParticipantSo, like you suggested, I started with the “Fixing HTTP 404 Errors” article. Our site is currently set to the “post name” permalink setting. The issue is resolved when I select either the “plain” or “numeric” permalink settings but the problem exists when I select “day and name”, “month and name”, “post name”, or “structured” settings.
So that folks can visit the event pages, I’ve set the permalink setting to numeric.
Any ideas for resolving the issue?

ParticipantThanks, that does help shed light on the issue. That also makes sense and is basically what I would expect.
Did you have a chance to do a conflict test?
There is one other easier step you might try before the conflict test. You could install the Debug Bar plugin. With the plugin, visit a problem page. Then click in the Debug Bar, and click on the Request tab. Could you take a screenshot of the information in this tab, or copy/paste the text here? This tab might mention a different plugin other than The Events Calendar. If it does, then we know what is likely conflicting.
Cheers!
