Tag cloud – links to tag achives

hi there, i’ve been looking through the support archives to try and figure this one out. seems this is a common issue going back several years. we have a tag cloud in the footer, but the links go to lots of ’empty’ pages. even though there ARE posts/events with these tags.
i’ve tried both the standard WP tag cloud widget and a third part tag cloud widget with more options. they both have the same issue.
Question: ARE all tags shared between tribe_events CPTs and standard WP posts? (i’m confused about this as my content person has been doing content not me). the tag list under POSTS seems to be the same as the tag list under EVENTS – are they interchangable?
I know you ask people to revert to twenty-x theme and turn off other plugins, but my client is currently content populating so i don’t really want to do this right now, and this seems to be an issue that has arisen in many contexts anyway.

Oh man, sorry to hear about the trouble with tags and tag archives. Let’s dig into this together to see what’s going on.

First off, I notice you are running the following versions of the plugins:

• The Events Calendar 4.2.1.1
• Events Calendar PRO 4.2.1

Are you able to update those to the latest versions? The Events Calendar is currently at 4.2.7 and Events Calendar PRO at 4.2.6. We’ve made a fair amount of updates and release a number of bug fixes between the versions you’re running and the current releases, so it would certainly be worth updating to see if that has any impact.

For what it’s worth, I created a tag cloud on my test site and the links appeared to work correctly when running a default WordPress theme and only the latest versions of both The Events Calendar and Events Calendar PRO.

Let’s start with the update and see what we find. If that doesn’t do the trick, I have one other possible recommendation. If that one doesn’t work either, then we’ll have to do deeper troubleshooting, as you mentioned, which would be to test for conflicts.

hi, thanks for the reply. i’ve updated to the latest event calendar plugins (inc. ‘pro’) – still getting this issue.
a bit of further information. if i switch to twenty15 then the tag archive pages work correctly. so i’ve also written to the theme developer about this issue. but i’m not sure why the tag archive pages wouldn’t work. i note they DO work (using my required theme) when the tags are created via POSTS, it’s tags created via EVENTS where the tag archive pages don’t work.

Hi Chris, thanks for following up!

Oh geez, sorry I missed the second part of your question. Yes, tags are shared between both Events and Posts. Tags are designed to create content relationships regardless of post type, whereas Categories (and Event Categories) can organize content specifically within the post type itself.

So, in other words, yes, deleting a tag in one place should and will delete the tag in all places since they are globally related to many post types.

Definitely keep me posted on what the theme developer comes back with. One thing you might want to try in the meantime is the recommendations outlined in this post:

It’s not exactly tailored to this issue, but the steps outlined in the post are relevant for fixing any WordPress issues where a Page Not Found error exists and could help get things back on track there while the theme developer digs deeper into why the issue only seems to persist when the theme is active.
