I notice in this thread that work is under way on the WPML incompatibilities with TEC Pro and Tickets Plus. I’m seeing various problems with WPML and Facebook Events. What is the current status? Are there known bugs logged with FB Importer/WPML?

    Regards,
    Keith

Good afternoon Keith and welcome back!

Thank you for reaching out to us.
We will gladly try to answer your question on this topic.

I notice in this thread that work is under way on the WPML incompatibilities with TEC Pro and Tickets Plus. I’m seeing various problems with WPML and Facebook Events. What is the current status? Are there known bugs logged with FB Importer/WPML?

You are absolutely right in your observations of issues with Facebook Events.

To be fair, at the current time, the only premium plugins that have officially been flagged as compatible with WPML are the core plugin (the free version of the Events Calendar) and the Events Calendar Pro (minus the recurring events which we are working on fixing).

In other words, we truly want to insure WPML compatibility with all of our premium plugins down the road.
But to be transparent, we never claimed that this compatibility was available with all the premium plugins. We are sorry if you were led to believe that this was the case.

In fact if you want to make sure it gets in there sooner than later, you can suggest it or cast your vote on other features in our User Voice forum.

I wish I had a better answer for you, but for now it’s the best one I have.

    Have a great day!

    Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the response. I’m just trying to get a handle on where things are with the Facebook plugin and WPML. I’m spending a lot of time trying to get to the bottom of various problems that I’m seeing. If these are already known bugs, then it’s probably not worth me continuing to investigate them.

You mentioned in the other thread that work is actively under way on WPML problems with Pro and Tickets plus. I’m trying to get a feeling for whether you are aware of specific issues with the Facebook Importer and WPML, and whether there is any likelihood of work being carried out to fix them. I know that you won’t commit to anything.

    Regards,
    Keith

    Hello again Keith,

I am afraid I did not communicate properly in my last reply. My apologies.

So let me try to clarify. The Facebook plugin does not work with WPML currently and yes we are aware of that fact.

Technically it is not a bug, it’s an unsupported feature.
Furthermore, the work on Events Tickets is actually not a bug fix, but rather a “new feature” (adding WPML compatibility which was not there before).

Keep in mind that WPML compatibility for some of our plugins (not all of them as stated earlier) is fairly recent.
What we are trying to do is to gradually increase the number of our plugins that support WPML.

As you can imagine, we have tons of new feature requests and every new feature requires a substantial amount of work.
This is why, in order to prioritize and please the largest number of customers possible, we add new features and compatibilities based on user demand.

To be completely transparent with you, so far WPML compatibility for the Facebook importer has not been requested.

I realize this is not great news, but I would still encourage you to suggest it as a desired compatibility in our User Voice forum.

    Have a great day!

    Hi Geoff,

When you say WPML does not work with Facebook Events, do you mean:

    a) Facebook Events doesn’t work with WPML becaue it contains no code to support it
    b) Facebook Events does contain code to support WPML but that code is not working.

The reason I ask is that it looks to me as though it should be fairly straightforward for me to add code to create a duplicate WPML event for any event imported by Facebook Events. WPML has hooks such as wpml_admin_make_post_duplicates for just that purpose.

However Facebook Events is already duplicating most of the events it imports. It creates duplicates but it does set them up as translations of each other. They are imported as distinct, unique events. That means that if I add code to create duplicates using the WPML hook, I will end up with 4 events for each event imported by Facebook Events.

If you could answer the question above it would help me dig further into what is happening.

I’ll also create a User Voice request post a link here, for anyone who may come across this thread in the future.

    Regards,
    Keith

    Good afternoon Keith,

    Thank you for your reply.

The answer to your question is: a) Facebook Events doesn’t work with WPML because it contains no code to support it

The reason I ask is that it looks to me as though it should be fairly straightforward for me to add code to create a duplicate WPML event for any event imported by Facebook Events. WPML has hooks such as wpml_admin_make_post_duplicates for just that purpose.

I can totally see where you are coming from.

To put this into perspective, as you can imagine, we get a ton of requests for new features every week from our great users.
This is why we need to prioritize these features based on popularity.

Once a new feature (or compatibility request) gets to the top of the priority queue, it then goes through the complete release cycle (dev, QA, etc..).

To be completely honest with you, sometimes WPML compatibility will mean that we need to rethink how some of our plugins do certain things (code rewrite). That’s why it might not always be as straightforward as we might expect it to be unfortunately.

However Facebook Events is already duplicating most of the events it imports.

    You are absolutely right.
That duplicate is a result of the incompatibility between WPML and the way our Facebook import plugin works.

Although I really appreciate the fact that you are looking forward to fixing this on your own time (which is really awesome), the truth is that answering DEV questions to that nature (and the ensuing conversation) is unfortunately outside of the scope of our support forum.

That being said, we absolutely encourage you to promote this idea to other users. Perhaps this will speed up the process 🙂

With that in mind, as stated before, we do aim to gradually make all of our plugins compatible with WPML.

I wish I had a better answer for you, but for now it’s the best one I have.

    Have a great weekend,

    Geoff B.
