    hi all—

i’ve read through the threads about this issue, though none of the fixes have either worked or applied to my situation.

here’s where im at. i was testing updates for the site via mamp/local host and every time i updated the regular ol’ events calendar plugin, i would then get a 500 server error message. i’ve tested it 5 times now and sure enough the issue is limited to the events calendar plugin.

i went ahead and did all the other updates on the site with the exception of the 4 events calendar plugins (events calendar, ec pro, community events, and the separate, but related, calendar events color plugin).

so, im curious to know what might be up with these local installs/500 errors, and how i can test the updates before making them on the live site.

    thanks so much,
    emily

Good evening Emily and welcome back to the support forums!

Thank you for your question. We completely agree, any error 500 message is to be taken seriously.

So without any further due, we would like to offer some suggestions:

    1. Most error 500 messages are caused by a corrupted .htaccess file. Sometimes, just copy pasting the content of a .htaccess file to a brand new file and replacing the previous one does the trick.
    2. Could you also please provide us with your system information in a private reply ?
    3. Finally, it is possible that you might have some template customization in your WordPress theme which might need tweaking. Please try reverting to a default WordPress theme such as twenty-fifteen to see if that solves the issue.

Let us know how that goes.

    Have a great day!

    hi geoff–

i think i’ve isolated the issue and wonder if you could lend some assurance for when i update the live site.

i tried everything you recommended, however the issue persisted. what i think is happening is a conflict of some sort with the site registration through modern tribe? what ended up working was to delete the community events and ce pro plugins and update the free ce plugin. then i manually loaded the community events and pro plugins, and all seems to be ok.

so im curious to know if the issue is in fact the site registration through modern tribe… meaning there may be no issue at all when i update the live site. or, will i need to do the manual update like i did on the test site?

    thanks,
    emily

    Good evening Emily,

I am glad you were able to solve this on your own, congrats on that!

To my knowledge the site registration is working fine, but I did come across a couple of users that had issues with registering their local installs. They did not however have any trouble updating their live site.

so im curious to know if the issue is in fact the site registration through modern tribe… meaning there may be no issue at all when i update the live site. or, will i need to do the manual update like i did on the test site?

That’s a great question. Updating manually is our recommend solution when automatic updates fail (for one reason or another).

So if I were you, I would:

    • Make sure I have a backup of wp-content AND the database
    • Try the automatic updates and test it out
    • If that doesn’t work you can resort to manual updates and trust this will work fine. That being said I still recommend testing the update.

Let me know how that goes.

    Have a great weekend,

    Geoff B.
