Rob
ParticipantWhen creating recurring events my list of events turns to hell creating an entry for each occurrence. So if I have events that repeat weekly for the next three years == whoah!!!
I have a client that will be maintaining her own events and this is going to be impossible for her. It would make more sense to only see one single event for recurring events instead of 100.
Please tell me I’m doing something wrong.

MemberHey Rob. Thanks for the note. Just so I’m clear: you’re saying that you have published a series of recurring events that goes on for the next 3 years. And you’re seeing all the instances of that recurrence showing up in list view. Right?
Just wanted to make sure. Assuming that’s the case…using the default list view is always going to show all events in a recurrence pattern. (You can hide individual events from the loop via the “Hide from Upcoming” checkbox within an entry, though). As you add more events the future instances of a recurrence pattern will get pushed off the page…how quickly will depend on the loop counts you set under Settings -> The Events Calendar.
But if you have 10 series of recurring events, and have the loop count at 10, you can generally configure it so that people are seeing upcoming events and aren’t seeing something that is months/years out. You may also want to check out whether anything in our template tag documentation ( https://theeventscalendar.com/support/documentation ) points you towards a way to customize this.
We have had a few requests for functionality along the lines of what you’re requesting: a single entry for recurring events, that all instances link to. Something like this may come down the road but it’s a rather dramatic reengineering of how we’ve built things so far so it probably wouldn’t be at least until the 2.1 lifecycle.
Sorry I couldn’t offer up more. If you’ve got other questions or if I misunderstood the issue entirely, let me know and I’ll get you what you need.

ParticipantI would definitely appreciate the change and I know my client would too. I imagine she’ll acclimate to the system or not.
The other issue with this is the default sorting in the Events tab (Dashboard) is later dates starting first. So when I look at events that are scheduled, I’m seeing events for 2013 first sorting to current dates last.
I think for the sake of keeping people organized this should be set to the opposite as a default. Where events that are happening currently are being show in the events list first. I looked to see if there is an option to change this (as a default) and there isn’t. This would also help.

MemberThanks for the follow-up, Rob. On the second point: that’s an interesting issue. Can’t you just resort them by clicking the start/end date header (depending on which you want sorted by) on the admin events list? Doing so should re-order them based on that selection.
I think the goal in setting them as reverse chronological by default was so that once you had a bunch of events passed, they didn’t take up the prime real estate atop your events list. IE: if I had events every day in March, by the 28th I’d log in and have to scroll down the events page a ways just to get passed those that had already happened.
Hope that helps. Let me know if I’ve misunderstood your request here, happy to adjust my response as needed.

ParticipantYes I can and know to resort the dates. However the client who has around average knowledge of these things contacted me immediately this morning with confusion and frustration. She’s already caused issues by making changes to the events and not applying them across ALL RECURRING EVENTS.
I’m speaking from the point of view from a person that is more of a website contributor than a developer (like myself). Developers will figure this stuff out. Contributors will not.
One single item for recurring events will result in a much better overall experience for people.

ParticipantAnd when events have passed shouldn’t they automatically be moved to a cue where they’re not seen in the current events cue?

MemberSolid points, on all fronts. Thanks Rob – I’ve shared this with the team and as I mentioned above we definitely can see the value our users will find in this.
As for having past events moved to a separate queue – that’s a solid idea. Have it tabbed like the user list on the backend, or like drafts / published / scheduled? I assume that’s what you meant but want to clarify before I log it as an issue…

ParticipantYes, that’s exactly what I mean.
With contributor driven websites with a lot of events and content these ideas will definitely help those people maintain their understanding of what’s current, pending, draft, etc.

MemberAwesome – thanks for the heads up. If you throw that into our “Feature Requests” thread (assuming you haven’t already) it’ll definitely be given consideration as we plot out future releases. That thread is right here: https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/events-calendar-pro-feature-requests/.
Hope this helps. If we can do anything else, give me a shout.

ParticipantI couldn’t agree more with all suggestions that Rob has made. These are pain points to me as well and the suggested improvemens would be wonderful to have. Thanks, Rob.

MemberThanks for the follow-up, Philipp, and for confirming as much. (Believe I just addressed another thread you had on a similar point as well). We have had a lot of requests for more random/configurable recurrence patterns even since this thread was initially posted, and I have no doubt of the value they’d add. We’ll be gradually working these in throughout the 2.1 lifecycle and look forward to hearing whether they are in line with what you guys wanted.
Thanks again for the feedback and apologies there isn’t more I can offer in the short-term. If anyone has any further questions please do let me know.
