I am working with a young charity at the moment and there website is evolving so that they will have a central website with pages for different site locations as opposed to each location just taking care of itself and doing its own thing.

This presents me with a problem now whereas when they were individual sites it didnt matter. Each location does its own events and what they would like to achieve are the following things now that the site layout has changed but it doesnt seem that any of these are possible?

    1. Be able to have a central calendar which shows the upcoming events of all locations but have a separate calendar for each location that shows just purely their own events. I cant see how I can tag an event to site and have multiple calendars?

    2. On Facebook event importer is it possible to import events from a closed group?

    3. In regards to the facebook event importer if separate calendars are plausible then how do I determine which import goes where?

    4. Could I present a different colour for each location if a single calendar has to be used? eg location one is shown in red, location two is show in blue and so forth?

    5. When there is a larger event on the horizon, be able to embed a registration form for that specific created event, straight on to a page (bypass having to go into the calendar and do it and make advertising of the event simpler)?

    6. Be able to show an thumbnail for an event in the widget?

At the present time I am working with two locations for this charity but this is soon to be a third.

Hope there is some advice in regards to making this happen?

    Many thanks!

    Justin

    Hi Justin,

Uff da, that’s a few questions. No worries, but I’ll take them one at a time. And thanks for numbering them!

    1. The plugin does not support a “central calendar” but there might be a way to do this by giving each event a category that would be the location. You could then filter by category to limit what was shown on a page. Currently, you can go into the code and set up a page for each category to have it display only that category, so you’d need a separate page for each. However, I should let you know that we are in beta testing for a filter bar that would allow you to display by category on only one page. With that in place you’d be able to have one calendar that folks could then select their chosen location to filter the events that are displayed. You can see a video preview at https://theeventscalendar.com/filter-bar-a-video-preview/.

    2. The Facebook importer can only import from public organizations or pages.

    3. All the events are brought into one calendar. It might be possible to separate them by categories, but that would be a manual process.

    4. Coloring events is possible by using an add-on to the plugin that is available on WordPress.org. It was built by a trusted user and many people have found it useful. Check it out at http://wordpress.org/plugins/the-events-calendar-category-colors/ and see if it does what you’re looking for.

    5. Our ticketing add-ons are designed to work with our calendar plugin. If you wanted to embed a form without using the calendar, you’d have to use either another plugin or work with the ticketing APIs directly.

    6. Thumbnails only appear when you hover over an event on the calendar. They don’t appear in the widget – there’s no room!

OK, so stepping back and looking at your big picture. You want to have a “central calendar” that has information from multiple locations. That’s possible. At the current time it would take a little effort, but the filter bar will soon make that fairly easy. And it would be possible to also color the events by location using the additional add-on.

What’s not possible is importing from closed Facebook pages and putting them in separate calendars, or even categories, unless you did that manually.

And it’s pretty much not possible to embed a registration form or use thumbnails the way you described.

So a mixed bag for answers for you, but I hope I’ve answered your questions. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.

Hey guys. Sorry to add to this thread, but point one is right up my street! How do i add specific calendars related to an event (or product). You talk of code?? Where and what? ta!

Currently i have this site http://shop.paulpetch.co.nz/ and each product has details and drop down info and checkout.

    1. Not the best solution so moving forward i’d love to have a calendar to replace the clumsy drop down. How do i “call” a calendar i’ve setup using the product name as its category?

From the calendar the date is picked and onto the checkout process. This leads me to my next question 😀

    2. Can i by pass the default page generated by this plugin and go straight to checkout? If so, how do i add the option to add to cart at this stage?

    3. You guys are awesome and really love this work. I’m happy to help answer more clearly if need be.

    Thanks!

    Hey there paulpetch,

We prefer that you start your own topics when you have questions like this – but I’ll let it slide, this time. 😉 Some of your questions are similar to Justin’s, but they’re also somewhat different.

Looking at your (beautiful) website, I see the dropdown you are referring to. Our plugin could display the workshops on a calendar and by adding tickets to the event you could go directly to a checkout through our Eventbrite or WooCommerce add-ons. I’m not sure what you’re currently using for your checkout system though, and I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t work the same way as it does currently. I don’t believe that you can “bypass the default page and go straight to checkout” as the checkout process isn’t part of our plugins. We simply hook into the services provided by Eventbrite and WooCommerce.

There’s two things you might want to take a look at to help you decide. The first is our Themer’s Guide (https://theeventscalendar.com/support/documentation/events-calendar-themers-guide/) which has information on how to work with the appearance of the plugin mostly. There’s also our documentation for the code details (http://docs.tri.be/) available.

Your site appears to have been professionally built for you (by you?). Maybe an option is to use our free The Events Calendar plugin for the calendar display and then create links to your current checkout system? It’s just an idea. That’s a level of customization we wouldn’t be able to support.

If I’ve misunderstood, or if you have additional questions, please let me know.

    Hi Julie.

Thank you! OK. I’ve had a think about what i’m exactly after and a new thread https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/calling-category-and-calendar-to-a-page/

I hope it makes sense. And yes, my development using a theme from http://www.cssigniter.com/

Julie, re read post and let me explain more. I have purchased both pro calender and also tickets. By passing the step prior to checkout is not required. Infact, it makes utter sense seeing as my workshops are infact events!

The current woocommerce variable checkout will stay- and be used for more traditional items such as t-shirts.

I like skype and if you want to chat about the tweeks i’m at paul.petch

    Hey Paul,

If I follow, looking at the other thread you opened it looks like you got your questions answered over there.

Did I miss something? Anything left that I can help you with?

Very sorry for the late response but didnt seem to get any email notification of your follow up 🙁

A central calendar would work with tagging/colours for us, so this one looks viable.

In the sidebar widget for the calendar is there anyway to choose the category it displays? Eg would need to drop the widget on to two different pages and show a different category for each (one category per site).

The filter bar seems interesting, what release date are you working to on this?

So does this mean that I can set up multiple calendar pages and show a different category on each one? Eg I create a calendar for Site A that shows category Site A as content and then go and do the same for Site B? I couldnt see an option to create a second calendar page in the settings? (sorry if I have misunderstood you on this). Basically each site has no reason to show the events going on at another location and dont want these to be shown in the calendar.

    Many thanks!

Julie where and how would I edit the code to have two calendars, each one set to show only a certain category?

    Many thanks!

    Hi everyone!

My this seems to be a popular topic!

In order to have a separate page for each category you’re going to have to do some customization, which we can’t really help you with. But I can tell you that it would likely involve creating a page template for each category and then filtering the calendar to display only that category on that page.

You can find some more details that you’d need to make this happen over in our Themer’s Guide (https://theeventscalendar.com/support/documentation/events-calendar-themers-guide/) and maybe even our Documentation (http://docs.tri.be/). If that’s above your skill level, I can point you to where you might find some folks who might be able to help. Let me know if you’d like me to do that.

Anything else I can help with?

I ended up paying a developer to integrate calendar and call categories to pages. Honesty, he is a seasoned coder and WP developer and he had to work hard to get it to work. You guys have not made it easy nor friendly. Stand alone yes, integration no.

Anyway, If anyone wants help i can help. Check out the integration over at http://shop.paulpetch.co.nz/shop/workshops-for-photographers-new-zealand/mastering-using-your-camera-in-manual-mode-exposure-workshop/

Next wave of dev will include colour coding events for main calendar as well as some visual tweaks.

    Cheers

    Hey Paul,

I’m glad you got the calendar working the way you wanted. Have you seen the add-on for color coding events that one of our trusted users developed? http://wordpress.org/plugins/the-events-calendar-category-colors/ It might be a good place to start for your next wave.

Thanks for offering to help other folks. You and your developer have done a great job in making it work for you! Do you have any suggestions on what we could have done to make your task easier?
