Missing/invalid WXR version number error

We were creating an event today and upon trying to save the event got the following error:

This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number

We’ve created two events since and not replicated the error. We haven’t had this issue before but would like to avoid it if possible. Has anyone had this error and do they know why it occurred?
