ParticipantHi Geoff,
From our previous conversation:
For Geoff B. – RE. WPML – "Month" titles not translating in French
Whilst on the topic, I have been advised by our French client that the translation for “Previous Events” ( Précédent Événements ) is not correct.
That is absolutely correct. As a native French speaker myself, I would like to see this corrected.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. In the meantime, you should be able to override the translation by either:
Re-scanning our plugins for translatable strings using WPML’s interface
Downloading and editing the latest language files found here: https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/wp-plugins/the-events-calendar/stable/fr/default?page=1 if you plan to use the language files instead of WPML’s string translation interface. We have 4.3.3 of Pro & Free. The problem persists. Just wondering if this has been corrected from your side since June? If so, how can we impliment your fix please?
Thank you
Greg

ParticipantHowdy Again Greg,
As with before I will make sure Geoff B. see your topic when he’s online. He is our translations expert so he is well suited to answering this.
Unfortunately though I don’t think this is something we can fix on ‘our side’. WordPress.org democratized translations a while back. Their goal was to make translations more accurate, which is certainly understandable. But, they also made translations much slower, and removed plugin author’s power over translations.
The best solution is for people to participate in WordPress.org Translations, voting on accurate ones to speed up their adoption. And then play the waiting game. Democracies can be a bit slow after all. 🙁 Sadly this waiting game must be played after every single plugin update. Thus, it often makes sense to not update right away, and wait for the new update to get translated before clicking update.
Geoff B knows more here. There are some workarounds you can do from your side that will help speed things up. He can walk you through these if you’re interested.
Cheers!

ParticipantHi Geoff,
I tried string translation. Could not find any strings for “previous events”
Whilst there are strings for “previous”, these will not always be plural so I didn’t want to make things worse by making something wrong in another instance.
So I located /wp-content/languages/plugins/the-events-calendar-fr_FR.po
and added the S to the end of each
#: src/views/list/nav.php:26
msgid “Previous %s”
msgstr “%s précédents”#: src/views/list/nav.php:34
msgid “Next %s”
msgstr “%s suivants”Saved, clear cache, refresh… no change. Checked on main site and a sub site.
Any ideas!?
Thanks
Greg

MemberHey Greg,
You are correct, there is no specific string for “previous events”
What you did is correct (adding “s”)
But, because you are using WPML string translation for translation (based on your WPML settings), these changes to the po/mo will not kick-in as long as there is an entry for these specific strings in WPML.
So this leaves you 2 options:
- In the string translation interface, you can delete these strings from WPML’s interface.
- Still using the string translation interface, you can search for Next %s and Previous %s and add the “s” there
Have a good week-end,
Geoff B.
