ParticipantWe have The Events Calendar and The Events Calendar PRO installed.
We’ve had to back out of updated versions twice, the latest time today because all events disappeared from current (October 2015) calendars after we updated to version 3.12.3 of The Events Calendar. We are running Version 3.4.1 of the calendar and version 3.2 of calendar PRO.
We’re using a Mantra child theme on a multisite installation.

ParticipantHey @crharrison,
I’m sorry to hear about this situation. The versions of The Events Calendar and Events Calendar Pro you are running are extremely outdated, so we will have to work through getting those up-to-date first before any more support can be provided here.
First, what version of WordPress are you running?
Next, please make a backup of your site and database. If you’re not sure how to do this, if you search online for “How to backup a wordpress website”, you’ll fortunately find tons of great resources; choose any method that works best for you, just as long as you have a good backup of your data 🙂
Finally, when you’re ready, update The Events Calendar and Events Calendar Pro on your site. If things immediately seem to break right after, do not change anything on your site, just leave it broken as-is and then see if any errors pop up on your site if you head to your site’s wp-config.php file and change this line of code:
define('WP_DEBUG', false);to this:
define('WP_DEBUG', true); If errors do show up, paste them here, we can try to help troubleshoot.
Thanks!

ParticipantWe were unable to resolve issues with earlier updates, which is why we’re running outdated versions. We really would like to update; however, we don’t think it’s going to serve our clients well to have their calendars all blank while we wait for a support response and a fix. Is there an upgraded support version, where you work with us one-on-one to get this fixed without messing up 10+ clients’ calendars?
We’re running the current version of WordPress.

ParticipantThere’s currently no such upgraded support version, unfortunately, and I’m sorry about your concerns with regards to your clients and such here.
However, it’s important to note that we put our plugins through an immense amount of QA and testing before every single plugin update. While we’re certainly guilty of having a few small bugs here and there like any complex piece of software, at this time there are no fatal errors with our plugins whatsoever.
So, in other words, if your site is so fragile that you cannot even update to the most recent versions of our stable, fatal-error-free plugins, then unfortunately there are much deeper problems on your/your clients’ site.
If simply updating to our stable, fatal-error-free plugins causes all of your events to disappear, then there are only four sources of these problems:
1. Conflict with other plugins and/or your theme.
2. Conflict with something on a server-level with your webhost (not likely).
3. Conflict with custom code that you have written.4
4. Some combination of all of the above.Unfortunately each of these things is outside the realm of both of our plugin code itself, and our support as well.
I’m sorry about this state of things but hope that this prompts further investigation in your sites at their core to figure out what the real and deeper problems are.
Please let me know if you have other questions here or if I can help with anything else.
Sincerely,
GeorgeOctober 26, 2015 at 11:41 am #1018063crharrison
ParticipantA change in the tag for event titles caused us to have to revert to an earlier version a few months ago. All of our sites have shadowed head text, so event titles became unreadable when we installed the new version then. We were unable to resolve it and reverted for that reason.
All other trouble-free plug-ins, WordPress, and our themes are running current versions, and our sites are pretty much perfect.
We’ll go ahead and follow your suggestions after we notify our 80 clients in advance that their “stable, fatal-error-free” calendars will not be working while we wait for support from the fine folks at The Events Calendar’s support website.

ParticipantI should mention that we are running the latest versions on a site that is not in the network, and that’s working fine. It’s the multi-site installation that’s not working when we install the new version of the events calendar.

ParticipantWe’ve taken the recommended steps and, as a result, events are not displaying on the calendars on our websites.
Here is one URL where you can see the problem: http://unitynorthhouston.org/events/
If you navigate back to September, you’ll see some events displaying, but not all that should be there.I changed the wp-config.php file as recommended. Here are the errors showing on this site:

ParticipantNote: The URL for the Houston church isn’t a good example, as it turns out.
I have re-installed the earlier version of the calendar, after sending you the debug info, to restore calendars on our clients’ websites.
October 27, 2015 at 11:27 am #1018999George
ParticipantIf the Houston Church website isn’t a good example, is there a specific broken events page that you can leave broken temporarily? If so, then on this site I would recommend the troubleshooting steps here → https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/testing-for-conflicts/
I understand your frustration with things and want to be clear that when I describe our plugins as “stable and fatal-error-free”, I’m not being patronizing or shrugging off responsibility in our support exchange here. I am trying to help! You and your clients want a working site; the most recent version of our software will lead to that; if simply updating to this version breaks your events pages, however, then there are other problems, and so I am just trying to help us zero in on what those problems are.
The steps I linked to above will help us “zero in” on what the problems are. To be clear, this is what I am recommending:
1. Pick a site that is a good candidate for this troubleshooting, however you determine that (e.g. if it’s one site that has particularly low traffic or something).
2. Let us know what this chosen site is by sharing the domain name to it directly.
3. Update to the most recent version of The Events Calendar and any TEC add-ons on this site.
4. If errors persist, let us know what the WP_DEBUG output for this specific site is.
5. On this specific site, do the complete set of troubleshooting steps here: https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/testing-for-conflicts/
6. Let us know what you find by doing those steps.
I appreciate your patience immensely and am happy to work with you in this thread towards a resolution, or at least a definitive discovery of/isolation of the source of the problem.
Thank you!

ParticipantHi George,
I followed the steps you originally requested exactly and provided exactly the info you wanted. Do I understand correctly that the results were of no use? Please help me understand.Regarding your new questions and requests: Our WordPress multisite installation is standard, in that the plug-in must be updated at the network level and, when it is, affects all websites in the installation. We have more than 60 sites on that network and others outside it. Many include the calendar.
Therefore, when we update to the latest instance of the calendar, all sites running the calendar lose all events for the current month and many events for previous months.
This is of great concern because the calendars are the second-most visited pages on those websites. They are in heavy use.
So no, there is no way to break just one website in the network.
I have already sent you the debug information today for the Houston website. It was not helpful?
I’m not sure where we go from here. Any thoughts?
October 28, 2015 at 2:21 pm #1019557George
ParticipantThank you for the detailed replies. In your second-most-recent reply before this one, you wrote this:
Note: The URL for the Houston church isn’t a good example, as it turns out.
So at core I was just trying to elicit a URL that IS a good example – is that clear?
—
As for the rest of your comments, at core there are no known issues like the ones you describe with The Events Calendar.
So if updating breaks events, there are other issues from your sites that need to be addressed. The only way forward, if resolving things is the goal, is to do the steps that I recommended in my above reply.
I am sorry about the nature of this situation. If you have 60 sites that break simply by updating The Events Calendar and/or its add-ons, then in essence it seems that there are 60 instances of theme/plugin conflicts that need to be addressed.
At core, this is not normal and is evident of your sites being otherwise broken:
Therefore, when we update to the latest instance of the calendar, all sites running the calendar lose all events for the current month and many events for previous months.
I am sorry, @crharrison.
October 28, 2015 at 3:15 pm #1019567crharrison
ParticipantWe have successfully updated all other plug-ins, WordPress and the theme with no problems, so it’s clear to us that there are no major issues with our sites, despite your continuing insistence that they are broken.
What did you learn from the debug file you asked for?
October 28, 2015 at 3:33 pm #1019575crharrison
ParticipantBecause our clients are sending emails with links to their calendars, now through Saturday, we will have to wait until next week to try to get resolution on this issue.
In the meantime, please tell us if the debug file you requested was helpful and, if not, why not.
When we say our sites break when the new version of the events calendar is installed — it’s ONLY the calendar that does not display correctly.
October 29, 2015 at 11:36 am #1019953George
ParticipantThe debug file is not very helpful for two reasons:
1. First, you said that the URL they came from is actually not a good one, at least assuming the DEBUG output is from the URL you said wasn’t a good one:
2. The code referenced in the file references outdated code from within The Events Calendar. For example, the static-method errors refer to a class method called addMinToStartDateInFields(), which is a long-deprecated and now non-existent method. In other words it doesn’t exist in our current code, so the DEBUG output is not referring to issues that exist with current The Events Calendar code.
October 29, 2015 at 12:05 pm #1019971crharrison
ParticipantWould you recommend completely uninstalling the calendar and then installing the new version?
If I do that, will I lose data?
