ParticipantHow do I control the file sizes of images uploaded into the Event Calendar as featured images?
My site is VERRRRY slow, and I have been running the free version of WP Smush and there are hundreds and hundreds of images beyond the 1mb limit for the free version of WP Smush. It seems counterproductive to allow users to upload files over 1mb in size and then pay another service to resize them.
Shouldn’t we be able to control the file upload size to begin with?

MemberGood evening Mike and welcome back!
Thank you for reaching out to us.
We are sorry to hear about your site running slowly due to very large images being uploaded by your users. I would love to help you with this topic.
The first thing you should know is that there are free alternatives to WPSmush that can handle larger image files. EWWW Image Optimizer comes to mind.
Shouldn’t we be able to control the file upload size to begin with?
Yes you can. By default users get the exact same limit than you do as far as the upload size allowed.
The good news however is that there are plugins to let you control that a little better.
Here is an example of such a plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-upload-restriction/Let me know if that helps.
Have a great day!

ParticipantI think adding another plugin is not a good solution. We already have a scaffolding of critical plugins for our business model, and run wishlist member for our access via roles. Am I wrong in thinking adding a plugin like the one you mention may conflict with wishlist member?

MemberGood evening Mike,
Thank you for taking the time to write back.
I totally understand where you are coming from.
In fact, it is best practice to always test the heck out of any new plugins in a safe environment (for conflicts among other things). If you have a dev or testing environment, I would highly recommend that.So in short I do not know if that plugin (or a similar one) will conflict with your install. The only way to find out is to test it.
With that in mind, if you are OK with that, at least you could reduce the upload limit size for everyone: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-increase-the-maximum-file-upload-size-in-wordpress/
The other approach would be to “borrow” from one of these plugins and create you own custom functions to limit file upload size based on the WordPress user role.
If coding is not really your cup of tea, you could always hire one of our recommended customizers to do the customization for you.
Have a good weekend,
Geoff B.
