When I try to add an event, and click Publish, the entire site crashes. I enter the title, description, date, tags and categories. Once I click Publish, the site gets reset. Any attempts to access the site http://www.pairadicetravel.com redirects to http://www.pairadicetravel.com/wp-admin/install.php

I was able to repeat this five times over the past four days, doing the same steps. Also once the site crashes, the database for the site is not accessible via myphpadmin. To restore the site I have to reinstall wordpress and run the install.php. Then copy over the wordpress files.

I have re-installed wordpress five times, removed all other plugins, re-installed the EC Pro, and a few other things. Below is my server info if that helps. Thanks.

    Platform Type: Debian
    MySQL Version: 5.5.32
    Perl Version: 5.8.8
    PHP Version: 5.3.13

    Hi echristoperj,

That’s very odd and I’m worried there’s a deeper problem than something at WordPress/plugin level. That said, let’s stop and take a look at things.

It sounds like you’ve tried most of our basic troubleshooting steps, but I’d like to be certain – have you tried deactivating all other plugins and at the same time did you switch to a default, unmodified theme such as Twenty Twelve? If so did this impact on the problem?

Above and beyond that can you visit the Events → Help admin screen and copy the contents of the System Information box and post it here?

    Thanks!

Sorry for the late repsonse. Yes, I’ve tried the default theme and still the same issue. Below is the Sys info. Thanks.

OK. I think for this one it sounds like there may be particular issues within the context of your hosting environment and there may not be much we can do to help, regrettably.

Can you provide any information about the sort of hosting you are using?

I’m using Fatcow on a shared hosting plan. After speaking to Fatcow Tech Support, they informed me that the plug-in is causing a high datbase usage. Which is causing the site to exceed the “max-questions” limit per hour limit. Which is currently 50,000. My site alone isn’t that busy to cause that much usage, I wish it was. Is there a reason why the plug-in would cause that much usage?

We’re certainly looking to improve the performance and efficiency of our plugin, particularly with regards to database queries. That’s being progressed incrementally over time, though, we don’t unfortunately have a quick fix we can drop in. Also, the reality is that some hosting environments simply don’t have enough “power” to handle certain stacks of plugins and certain quantities of data.

The fact that the primary problem – the site crashing – happens when you publish an event stands out as highly unusual and I don’t recall any other reports of this. Additionally, this stands out as some pretty extreme and unusual behaviour:

Also once the site crashes, the database for the site is not accessible via myphpadmin. To restore the site I have to reinstall wordpress and run the install.php. Then copy over the wordpress files.

Is the entire database actually wiped out on each occasion? If so, max_questions limit or not, I think there are more serious issues here than our queries and at a level we can’t address. Is migrating to a different hosting plan an option at all?

I’m able to recover after a crash much quicker now. It doesn’t take all those steps mentioned previously. Now I just change the user name in the wordpress config.php file and the site is back up. Which reenforces the max_question limit per user issue. So I just change the username when it crashes and carry on. Not a good fix at all. I have 4 other sites with the same plugins, but they lack EC and have issues. It’s just this site with EC that has the high database usage.

After a search, this thread https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/pro-3-1-crashes-my-site/#post-76364 issue is very similar to mine.

Oh I forgot. No, the database is not erased after a crash. It’s kept intact.

This is definitely a frustrating issue.

Right at this time, however, I don’t think there is anything else we can do to help you. The majority of our users experience no such thing and even the thread you linked to – which certainly relates to query performance – misses this distinct feature of requiring a new database user to be specified in order to work around hosting limitations after each event is published.

Though we do have plans to make improvements, as outlined in my last response, if there was a general problem here I think we would see a far greater number of reports: not to say it isn’t an important issue (particularly so for you) but just that it only seems to crop up in a limited number of cases.

If a move to a different hosting plan with your current or some other provider is a possibility then I’d encourage you to investigate that course of action.
