community events css

I found this https://theeventscalendar.com/adding-custom-css-to-your-community-events-pages/ and was able to successfully change the styling for my community events pages. The function.php file I changed was the one I found in appearance>editor.

my question is… was that the best file to change? should i have created a different copy of that file somewhere else to modify? I’m mostly concerned about updating my theme or plugins and wondering if that function.php file is going to be updated and cause me to lose the css I added.
