    Hi,

This is a continuation of this thread https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/subscribe-to-continuous-sync-url/#post-1129781

What I would like to achieve for the schools websites that use Events Calendar Pro is something similar to this http://www.raglanciwvcprimary.co.uk/diary/subscribe/

It would be great for parents to be able to add the schools calendar to their personal calendars by going to the webpage on their mobiles and click a link that then opens up the subscription in their mobiles calendar.

Looking forward to getting some advise…

    Thanks
    Susanna

HiĀ Susanna and welcome back to the forums!

Each page on The Events Calendar has buttons that visitors can click to add events to their calendar application, whether it’s on their phone or desktop computer. Here’s a screenshot of one of those buttons on your site.

One thing to note is that the buttons generate files that the visitor downloads into their personal calendars. In other words, it’s a one-time download that pulls the events that are currently published to the calendar. Any events published to the calendar after the download will not be included.

The only true mechanism for someone to “subscribe” to your calendar is to use RSS. The RSS feed for your calendar can be found here:

    http://glasllwch.org.uk/calendar/feed/

That is the link your visitors can use to subscribe to calendar updates using the RSS application of their choice.

Does this help answer your question? Please let me know. šŸ™‚

    Cheers!
    Geoff

    Hi Geoff

So are you saying that you can accomplish this

    http://www.raglanciwvcprimary.co.uk/diary/subscribe/

by having a button on a page with this http://glasllwch.org.uk/calendar/feed/ as the link

and that would then have a constant synchronisation with the school calendar in a parents personal calendar, so when ever the school calendar is updated or amended parents personal calendars will update.

What about this from the previous thread http://glasllwch.org.uk/calendar/list/?ical=1&tribe_display=list

I would have thought this functionality was quite a standard/common thing and there would be a lot of demand for it from Events calendar users…

    Thanks
    Susanna

HiĀ Susanna and thanks for following up!

Yes, that is correct.Ā Creating a button that links to the calendar’s RSS feed will indeed allow folks to subscribe to your calendar in an RSS reading application.

[…] and that would then have a constant synchronisation with the school calendar in a parents personal calendar, so when ever the school calendar is updated or amended parents personal calendars will update.

To be clear, RSS is different than calendar synchronization. RSS pushes content updates to a RSS reading application. Some calendar (and email) applications have an RSS reader built in, but I would say that is the exception rather than the rule. It’s great for knowing when new content has been published to a site but is not the same as pushing calendar events to someone’s personal calendar.

I would have thought this functionality was quite a standard/common thing and there would be a lot of demand for it from Events calendar usersā€¦

Yes, there is indeed quite a bit of demand for method to sync calendars but it’s not as standard or common as you might think and a lot of it depends not just on our plugin but what calendar applications are being used for those personal calendars and whether they support the ability to pull iCal content that is pushed to them. Not all of them do. šŸ™‚

Let me know if you have any other follow-up questions about calendar subscriptions and I’d be happy to help as best I can!

    Cheers,
    Geoff

    Hi Geoff,

If RSS feeds don’t work on calendar apps then I don’t think it’s a solution.

    What about this …

What about this from the previous thread http://glasllwch.org.uk/calendar/list/?ical=1&tribe_display=list

    HiĀ Susanna!

That’s the iCal file I brought up in my first reply. That will indeed add events to a person’s calendar application but it will not sync events to their calendar — in other words, it’s a one-time import of events.

I do want to underscore that The Events Calendar does not offer any syncing services to other calendar applications. The methods we’ve discussed so far will either allow folks to do a one-time import of events into their calendar application or subscribe to an RSS feed of updates when published.

DoĀ you have any follow-up questions here about the iCal files or RSS feeds? Let me know!

    Thanks,
    Geoff

Hey there! This thread has been pretty quiet for the last three weeks, so we’re going to go ahead and close it to avoid confusion with other topics. If you’re still looking for help with this, please do open a new thread, reference this one and we’d be more than happy to continue the conversation over there.

    Thanks so much!
