You CSS works perfectly, just what I needed.

I do wonder why this stopped working in the first place (it didn’t display this behaviour when I first installed TEC), however that seems academic now.

EA is now activated, I had to switch my theme to Twenty Seventeen, enter the license key again, refreshed to check it kept it (it had). Then switched back to my custom theme and the EA license entry stayed valid. Didn’t have to do trial and error with any other plugins.
