Rob KinnearParticipantOk thanks I think the drop down option looks the most promising at the moment. Before I give up for the night, I found this article which I wondered whether it might help – it shows how to set bounds on the google api. I saw that the js file in your plugin had code similar to this and wondered if you thought this might work… http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9131236/google-maps-api-autocomplete-bound-to-uk-only
Sorry to keep bugging you but it would be great if I could get this to work!Rob KinnearParticipantOne last try 🙂 could the “Near” field have UK automatically inserted after it and the fly out list of places disabled? This would mean that if a user searched for Cambridge, it would automatically use Cambridge+UK and hitting search would bring up the results..?
Rob KinnearParticipantOk – the only other thing I can think of (trying to pre-empt my discussions with the client later in the week!) would be to introduce a dropdown list of counties this would give the user a set list of areas to try… Would it be fairly easy to add a drop down menu above the search bar using functions? I could create a custom menu using urls that search for specific areas…
Rob KinnearParticipantHere’s another idea – can the ‘Search’ field be changed to also search the address for each event as this would mean I could hide the “Near” label (or change to postcode only) and get the results I need…
Rob KinnearParticipantOk – finally managed to sort this out – deactivated all plugins again (backed up site) and reinstalled WordPress core – on activating the plugins again, it’s all come back online. Phew!
Rob KinnearParticipantPS – all pages have ben deleted from trash as well…
Rob KinnearParticipantOk – after a few more hours I’ve done the following (purging the cache and refreshing permalinks at each stage). Deleted all pages but the homepage, switched off all plugins except the FREE Events Calendar Plugin, deleted both Events Calendar plugins and re-installed them. I now have no other plugins but Varnish Purge and the Events calendar active on the site (free version – kept PRO deactivated for now to limit possibilities). I have checked the Events Calendar display settings which are set to ‘events’ and ‘event’. The following url still gives me a 404 error: http://www.eastlife.ooh-websites.co.uk/events/ help!!
Rob KinnearParticipantI’ve tried that – now getting a 404 error.
In terms of my investigations earlier, the theme I’m using allows custom sidebars which didn’t seem to be working and I realised that it was Events Calendar not being a real page that was the issue (I had been trying to use the theme’s own custom sidebars and WooTheme’s custom sidebar plugin)…
Rob KinnearParticipantMight be worth adding that’s I’ve tried this on both my computers and also my iPhone (on different networks and both the same – no UK Cambridge on search on my site but just the 2 showing when I try searching on Google maps…
Rob KinnearParticipantTrouble is I get the same here in the uk. If I put in Norwich or Peterborough which are local towns, everything works fine however, when I put in Cambridge, I click the search button and it gives me 5 or 6 options all in the US but no UK Cambridge or any way of scrolling to another option. When I go to google maps and type in Cambridge it only gives me the 2 UK options. I’ve got a real problem if people find it hard to search for their local Cambridge as that is the main city where all my events are held!
Rob KinnearParticipantActually – I’ve been having a play with the search bar again and now it’s not giving me any option at all for Cambridge in the UK! Can you have a look and see if you can search for events in Cambridge (without having to put UK after it?
Rob KinnearParticipantAh I see – ok that’s a shame. As my events site is based on a specific region of the UK, it seems odd to users when they see Cambridge in the US when searching. But I realise that this is out of your hands – thanks for the response!
Rob KinnearParticipantOk – thanks for pointing me in the right direction Geoff. I’ll let you know if I find a solution!
Cheers
