Going to settings > permalinks settings and resaving the permalinks cured it! I would not have thought of that. Thanks, Erich

I made some progress. I changed the path name of the free version of The Event Calendar and reinstalled it. Now I can see the link inside the dashboard. All of my events are still listed. But on the webpage clicking the events link I only an empty page. BUT I see a list view of three events – and somehow I lost some of the formatting of the bottom of my page.
