WP Query to show only todays event

Been working off this thread and can’t quite close the deal:

Show only today's events

I am able to extract the event post from the correct category, but I cannot get the

‘start_date’ => $current_date

to work. The Query is extracting posts from other days as well.
I assume ‘start_date’ is correct, but what should I define $current_date as?
