    Hi,

I am interested in creating a calendar for running events (marathons, 5K’s, etc), where users can submit their race to my calendar. I’d like to have the calendar (and search options) be similar to that found on http://www.coolrunning.com/eventcal/search/. Would the Events Calendar PRO (with any applicable add-ons) allow me to accomplish that?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sean

    Hello Sean,

Thanks for your interest in our plugins! I have a couple of things for you. First, “where users can submit their race to my calendar” sounds like a perfect fit for our Community Events (https://theeventscalendar.com/shop/wordpress-community-events/) add-on. That gives you the ability to have people submit events and maintain as much or as little control over what goes on the calendar as you like. You can even give it a test run over at http://wpshindig.com/events/community/add.

The second thing is a bit more challenging. There is a basic search feature that’s part of The Events Calendar plugin, but we are working hard on getting a new add-on developed that would add a filter bar to the calendar that would probably give you a lot of the search capability you’re looking for, if you set your events up right. You can see a preview of it over at https://theeventscalendar.com/filter-bar-a-video-preview/.

And to be clear, neither of these add-ons requires Events Calendar PRO, they work just fine with the free The Events Calendar plugin. You would only need PRO if you were looking for the specific features added by that add-on.

Does that help clear it up? Is there anything else I can help you with?

Thanks so much Julie! This definitely does help clear things up a bit. Good to know that many of the search features are included in the free plugin. In addition to the Community Events add-on, I’ll definitely be looking to get PRO because I’d need features such as recurring events, single day view, and more.

Speaking of PRO, a few quick questions on whether these features are available or planned:
    – Can a user choose to hide recurring events?
    – For the “View as: Week” view, is it possible to hide the “All Day” and hours column so only a list of events is shown on each day of the calendar?

Lastly, since I will be featuring running races on my calendar, I’ll generally only have a few events listed for Monday-Friday, but will have 100+ events occurring on any given Saturday or Sunday. Given that, how would the “View as: Month” and “View as: Week” be effected? I see on http://wpshindig.com/events/month/ that each event has the title shown. If there were say, more than 5 events occurring on a certain day, could there be a “view all of today’s events” link that would bring the user to the “day” view for that date, instead of showing 100+ event titles in the Monthly view?

Again, thank you very much for taking the time to read all of this. I just want to ensure that The Events Calendar would be able to meet my needs before purchasing Community and PRO. Also, if any of the above would require custom development work, does Modern Tribe offer those services or recommend any 3rd party developers?

    Thanks again!

PS – is it possible to import events into Events Calendar PRO via a CSV file?

    Hi Sean,

Oh my! That’s a lot of events!!

Yes, I can see why PRO would be of interest to you. I also think you’d get value out of the Map View where folks could see what’s happening where.

The best answer I have for your questions about hiding recurring events and columns in the week view is that it’s WordPress, anything is possible! However, that isn’t something that the plugin(s) do out of the box. And having that many events on a particular day would work okay on the monthly calendar and the daily view, but I’m thinking it would pretty much blow up a weekly calendar.

I do think that the plugins could do a good job for you, but they would require some customization to manage that quantity of events. And one of the first things I would consider is just eliminating the option of a week view and stick with monthly and daily only.

Modern Tribe does not do customization work on the plugins, but we do have some developers we can recommend. You might want to try WerkPress (http://www.werkpress.com) or Nick Ciske (http://thoughtrefinery.com/). WerkPress’s minimum is $500 and you’ll have to negotiate with Nick directly.

Oh! I almost missed your CSV question. Our 3.2 maintenance release just hit the streets yesterday that now includes this feature. So yaay for that!

If there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

    Hi Julie,

Awesome! That’s great timing with the CSV feature being released yesterday. And thank you for those recommendations for developers. I’ll be reaching out to them soon to see what it’d cost to get the customization done that I’d need.

I had the Events Calendar at the top of my list of calendars going in, and after getting some additional info from you (and some competitors) it’s become clear that Modern Tribe’s product is not only the best available, but your support is also top notch. I can’t thank you enough for the information and recommendations you’ve provided!

    Hi Julie,

Just a few more questions before I go ahead and purchases PRO and Community Events (want to make sure I do my due diligence where there are no refunds!)

For the Community Events add-on, it appears (in the demo) that the “Use Saved Venue” and “Use Saved Organizer” drop-downs show ALL venues and organizers that are in the database, regardless of the user. Is there a quick fix to show each user only the Venues and Organizers that have been submitted by their account?

Could the “End Date / Time:” field be hidden from the front and back-end, or would that break the calendar?

Would it be possible to get a copy of the Filter Bar add-on prior to the official release? I realize it would be a beta but given that it would be a primary feature for my calendar (with thousands of events) I am a bit hesitant to purchase prior to trying it out.

Where I will require some customization of my install, I want to make sure that I still could easily update my calendar with any new releases. How could I ensure that any customization done by a developer wouldn’t be lost when updating to the newest version of PRO and Community Events?

    Thanks again!
