Use of Event Categories in a Menu

Hi I have created a menu using the event cateegories which works but would find it hugely beneficial if at the side of the event categories it could display the number of items in the category. Therefore visitors could see categories which may have no events at a particular point in time before opening the link and being disappointed. The page I am particularly looking at is the Patchwork & Quilting Event Finder Page

It’s fairly involved to do this with the WordPress nav menus so what I would suggest is to use a widget plugin like this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-taxonomies-menu-widget/ or http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/taxonomy-widget/
