Upgrading 2.0.11 to 3.8.x explodes on recurring items

Hi, I’ve spent a bunch of hours on this, but am really coming up blank. I have a site running 2.0.11 with about a thousand events. Every time I try to upgrade the recurring items are just completely hammered — tons of duplicate copies, most of the dates are bad, etc. It’s unusable. I drastically reduced the number of event items, and while that keeps the server from timing out (as often) on the schema conversion, they’re still just completely worthless.

I’ve disabled all plugins. I’ve set the recurrence meta field to “none” for everything. I’ve done everything I can possibly think of. I’ve spent 20+ hours messing with it. Every time, the symptoms are the same: huge numbers of events with bogus dates, turning on the pro plugin times out multiple times, then finally comes up for air, but everything is just trashed data-wise. I would love some insight — I can’t believe I’m the only person to have this problem. Right now my only remaining thought is to ensure every recurring event has only one start date in the meta fields, then reapply all of the recurring event logic post upgrade. Please tell me I don’t have to do this.

Wait. I think I spoke too soon. Reverting to 2012 theme, then doing the upgrade seems to have worked. But only after the pro plugin re-enabled. So I think I’m good.
