Trouble with targeting templates from functions file

I am having trouble hooking in the templates from the functions file. I have a function that is checking for user role and permissions and then outputs certain page content. I am using the is_page_template() to target the copies I have in my subdirectory (so is_page_template(‘events/gridview.php’) but I am not getting any kind of result. Any ideas?
