I am setting up our web site for tennis lesson signup this summer and have a couple questions:
I would like to setup a class schedule and signup / registration.
I am creating the available classes as events and categorizing them under tennis.
I am then trying to include them on our tennis page with the “this week” widget.
I have the widget displayed, but I’d like to show the timetable to the left (Time of day), just like in the week view of the main calendar. Is this possible?
Also, I’d like the class entry to show as a square colored box filling up the time slot (like Google Calendar). Is this possible in this widget as well?

2nd question: I have installed Event Tickets for RSVP, but would like the users to fill out a registration form when signing up to attend the class. Is this possible using this add-on?

    Thanks

    Hey Christopher,

Thanks for reaching out. You describe a few things that are technically possible, but would unfortunately require writing custom code to achieve. I say “unfortunately” because we cannot help with custom coding—check out the “Product Support” section of this page for more information: http://theeventscalendar.com/terms.

That being said, I have specific questions regarding your goals.

I have the widget displayed, but I’d like to show the timetable to the left (Time of day), just like in the week view of the main calendar. Is this possible?

When you describe showing a timetable, do you mean that basically all of the hours of the day will exist on the left-hand side of the widget view, and then the events are sort-of “plotted” on this axis according to their time slots? This is like the Week View and so I am just wondering if you can elaborate here. If what I described here sounds about right, this is unfortunately a much more complicated customization to make than it might seem. 🙁

Also, I’d like the class entry to show as a square colored box filling up the time slot (like Google Calendar). Is this possible in this widget as well?

This is possible but only by writing custom CSS. To write custom CSS on your site, definitely check out a [free!] tool like Firebug if you use FireFox, or the Developer Tools for either Safari or Chrome. They have “Inspector” tools that let you zoom right over the element whose styles you need to change—in this case, the class entries. If you are not comfortable writing this code yourself, your best option would then be to hire a developer to do it for you.

2nd question: I have installed Event Tickets for RSVP, but would like the users to fill out a registration form when signing up to attend the class. Is this possible using this add-on?

There unfortunately is not a way to add an additional step to the RSVP process, like requiring the folks signing up to then also fill out a registration form on your site. Not to beat a dead horse, but adding this to your site is technically possible with some very serious and extensive code customization….

I’m sorry to bear the bad news on a number of points here, @Christopher. I’ve mentioned hiring someone to help you with writing the custom code, if need be, and so in closing I just wanted to share a list of great developers that we maintain here → http://m.tri.be/18k1. We have no affiliation with any of these folks—they’re simply some well-respected names in the community that we’ve compiled to share in situations like this one.

    Sincerely,
    George

    Hi George,

    Thanks for your reply.

For the timetable … yes, what you are describing is exactly what I am looking for. I figured it wasn’t possible without coding, but thought I’d ask.

As for the CSS modifications, I have Chrome and use the developer tools extensively, so I’ll play with that.

And for the registration form / RSVP, I’d have to say again that I figured it must require development, but thought I’d ask.

I would add that what I am asking for is similar to adding a feature like Signup Genius to Events Calendar. I have seen other posts on this forum asking for features such as this and, in my opinion, I think it would be highly popular. Seems that lesson / course / meeting signup (such as the tennis lesson signup I am working on) is still a highly manual process for small websites unless they do a ton of custom development.

    Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your feedback here, @Christopher. You’re right about two things for sure:

    • Many people want this sort of functionality.

    • We have a lot of room to improve on this front!

I agree that this process is currently too tedious, and I’m sorry that our plugins aren’t quite optimized in the specific areas that would be the most helpful here.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can try to help with! 🙂

    Sincerely,
    George
