Google Search Console reported 587 index and soft 404 errors on my site. These errors were all on organizers, venues, and categories. In each listing, content included name, address, phone number and google map displayed, but the view returned the notice: “There were no results found”. My major concern is these are showing as index errors in Search Console. Never had this alert before and I’ve been using your Event Calendar for many years.

The error also showed on several pages that have events (like Easter Events, Christmas Events, etc) that only have content seasonally. “No matching events listed under Easter Events. Please try viewing the full calendar for a complete list of events.” That is an excellent response but why is it showing as a 404 error?

The errors apparently started in March 2018. Venues that have content in the editor were not affected. Pages that have text along with the shortcode for the category are not affected. I very seldom have content for Organizers other than name, address, and google map, so they ALL show index/soft 404 errors.

Is this a glitch in The Event Calendar or something new with Google Search Console? Adding content to 587 listings is going to be a bit time consuming. Hoping there is a somewhat easier fix. Here are a few links as examples:

(btw I have a page with Christmas Events that uses the shortcode for the Christmas events category and it shows correctly, even though the “category” doesn’t

Any insight you could provide would be very much appreciated.

    Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. I’ll try to help with your questions if I can.

I’m not familiar with Google Console, so I may not be understanding your question fully. Are you saying there are Organizer and Venue pages that do not display when viewing them on the front end, and instead show a 404 error?

Can you show me a screenshot of the admin page for one of these items, and provide the link to it on your site where you see the 404?

The links you have provided do not show 404s, but rather a “This site can’t be reached” message. Is your site currently down?

    Thanks,
    Sky

Sorry, there was a code error with the https:// that has now been corrected. My Search Console still reports craw errors 404 for organizers and event venues that do not have upcoming events. Here are a few more examples:
    https://texomaconnect.com/texoma-easter-events/
    https://texomaconnect.com/venue/bon-appetit-yall/
    https://texomaconnect.com/venue/bridgeview-marina/
    https://texomaconnect.com/organizer/texoma-powerboat-association/
    https://texomaconnect.com/organizer/van-alstyne-chamber-of-commerce/
    https://texomaconnect.com/venue/downtown-sherman/

These show No Result found which is normal, but why do they throw a 404 error and can I do anything about it?

Also, not all, but the majority of the venues and organizers are “locked” and do not appear in the dropdown list when entering a new event. I’ve double checked and the venue is “Public” in the Venue list. I deleted and restored the Advanced Post Manager plugin and still doesn’t show the venues or organizers in the dropdown list.

Thanks – you are the best!

    Hi again,

Looking at the links you posted, I’m seeing venues, organizers, and categories that don’t appear to have any upcoming events associated with them. The pages do load, and display a notification saying there’s no events. I’m not sure what you mean about the 404 error. Where are you seeing these? Can you provide a screenshot?

For your second issue can you explain in more detail what you mean that “The majority of the venues and organizers are locked?”

Can you provide a screenshot of that as well? Are you referring to on the single event admin pages? I’m a little confused because you mentioned the Advanced Post Manager plugin, which is for sorting events on the page that displays all of the events in the admin. Is this question in regards to the APM functionality?

    Thanks,
    Sky

Sorry, I didn’t explain the second issue very well. When I enter a new
event and try to select a venue, the venue does not appear in the Select
Venue drop down list and the “Create:” box appears. I’ve even pasted the
name of the venue in the box but it still prompts to “Create”
This is one that didn’t work

I have 876 venues, but now only about 50 of them are available to choose
from in the dropdown list. I am sorry I can’t remember which specific
venue came up “this venue is Locked”

On issue number 1: The 404 error was reported in Google Webmaster tools
(now known as Google Search Console), reporting under Crawl Errors.

It appears that the issue with venue listings was corrected with the latest
update this morning. Apparently only the venues I actually created were
available to select from. Now I can see all of the venues created on my
    site.

    Thank you!

    Hi again,

Oh yes, the issue with the venues and organizers! That had us scrambling yesterday for sure.

Thank you for the additional information regarding the 404 error issue. Unfortunately, none of your images were uploaded. Not sure if you are replying from email, but images don’t seem to work with that. You can upload images in the editor from desktop.

    Thanks,
    Sky
