ParticipantIf I had to guess, I’m seeing the intended behavior (*not* my expected behavior), but I want to confirm and I don’t think it makes sense.
Here’s what I’m seeing after I made a single event in February 2017 on a new site with latest WP and TEC.
- When I come to the calendar, I see the current month (March 2016) with no events (so far so good). I can’t go back a month only forwards (I’m intuiting that there aren’t past events, but it makes me feel weird).
- When I do go forward a month (to April ’16), I can’t go backward to the current month, even though I was just there and left it via a paging link.
- When I jump ahead to March 2017, I can now only go backward and not forward.
- I now go back one month to February 2017, I can see my event and now there are no paging links in either direction.
While the above is logically consistent, it feels wrong for a few reasons:
- It allows you to view something, move forward, and not move back.
- You can still jump backwards/forwards with the date chooser, so it’s not like the calendar is completely pointing you toward the existing events or totally blocking you from certain months..
- I can’t think of any calendar program I’ve ever used that works this way. I think meeting that expectation with the month view is important and then users must pick the appropriate view for their use case.
- The absence of events may still be meaningful (either they didn’t enter them or there were none).
It seems like you’re trying to help people find events when in calendar view and looking at a month with no events, but I think this is the wrong way to do it. Why not provide a messages like “Just so you know, there aren’t any events before {Month} {YYYY}” once a user pages back to the first month containing events and “Looking for the next event? It’s in April 2017.”

ParticipantHey Mark,
Thanks for reaching out to us!
I definitely see where you’re coming from here with this one. Although we have the logic there to not display the links if there aren’t any events to page to, it does feel a bit strange if you’ve started in a month and you’re not able to page back to where you’ve started. Will definitely look into this further and bring up with the team.
However, you can override this using this tutorial, which allows the month view to paginate previous and next regardless of whether or not there are any events to display.
Let me know if this helps.
Thanks!
