When viewing an event the link that should be to the previous event points to the oldest event in the database regardless of what event you view. The next event link works correctly. I tried deleting the oldest event, and all that happens is the link changes to point to the oldest event that remains, never the previous event chronologically. This only occurs in single event view. Navigation links work fine in week or month view.

    Hey @gsacarleton,

I’m sorry to hear about this ! I unfortunately was not able to re-create these problems on my testing site, so I’m wondering if there is a theme for plug-in code conference on your site…

For now I would recommend running through the steps laid out in this article → https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/testing-for-conflicts/

These steps will help reveal if there’s a conflict, or will at least confirm that there isn’t one.

Let me know if you can run through these steps, and if so, what you find!

    Thank you,
    George

I tested the issue before logging this ticket with all other plugins off and with the 2014 theme set and the issue occurs.

As for replicating the issue, it’s pretty simple.

    Take this event http://gsacarleton.ca/event/mikes-place-trivia-4/2015-09-23/

The previous link goes to the oldest event we have on the site http://gsacarleton.ca/event/ottawas-1st-bike-rave-a-mobile-dance-party/ (this event is over a year old) even though it should link to next most recent event http://gsacarleton.ca/event/tomato-preservation-workshop/ (an event from the previous day).

If you click forward to the next event http://gsacarleton.ca/event/gsa-council-2015-09-25/ the previous event is still http://gsacarleton.ca/event/ottawas-1st-bike-rave-a-mobile-dance-party/ and not http://gsacarleton.ca/event/mikes-place-trivia-4/2015-09-23/ which is the most previous event.

The back link is always to the first (oldest) event. It’s not that http://gsacarleton.ca/event/ottawas-1st-bike-rave-a-mobile-dance-party/ is bugged or something, if I delete it, the faulty previous links will point to the oldest event in the system. This has to be a bug. Somehow events calendar is deciding that the previous event is the oldest event and generating that link every time. Maybe it’s looking at the wrong variable or table spot. The wrong call to make the decision between oldest and previous?

All this occurs on a mirror site where I’ve disabled all plugins and set the 2014 theme: http://404.547.myftpupload.com/event/mikes-place-trivia-4/2015-09-23/

I hope that helps you understand what I’m trying to explain. Let me know what the next steps are. Thanks

Thank you so much for doing all that testing already, I’m sorry to have presumed that you didn’t do so before posting!

And the link on your mirror site is helpful – thank you for this, too!

I’m curious, does anything about this behavior change if you go to Settings > General in your site’s wp-admin and try setting the Timezone to something local to where you live? Try both a “numeric” style like “UTC-7” or something, and then also try a “named” style like “America/Los Angeles” for example. See if any difference is made there.

As for replicating the issue, it’s pretty simple.

You’re right about this being simple to reproduce on your site itself, but what I’m particularly interested in is reproducing this on my own testing site – I’m running the same Tribe plugin versions that you are, in a default theme, and for me the previous and next buttons both work well…it’s an interesting issue.

Finally, I’m curious: what are your site’s permalinks settings for both your live site and your mirror site? e.g. are they /%postname%/, for example?

Thank you for your patience here! I’ve yet to recreate this problem myself but am determined to help resolve these issues 🙂

    Sincerely,
    George

    Hi good folk at Tribe

I’m having the exact same issue as mentioned above. In a single event view, click on the previous event and it goes way back into August somewhere.

Interestingly, if you scroll forward through the events the previous event doesn’t change – it seems ‘stuck’ on the one passed event.

    Cheers!

    Hi @wanganuiedc

Sorry to hear that you’re having the same problems!

Did you run through the troubleshooting steps I linked @gsacarleton to? If not, run through them as described here and let us know what you find → https://theeventscalendar.com/knowledgebase/testing-for-conflicts/

If that doesn’t help, does anything about this behavior change if you go to Settings > General in your site’s wp-admin and try setting the Timezone to something local to where you live? Try both a “numeric” style like “UTC-7” or something, and then also try a “named” style like “America/Los Angeles” for example. See if any difference is made there.

Finally, I’m curious: what are your site’s permalinks settings? e.g. are they /%postname%/, for example? If you change this setting, then click “Save Permalinks”, does the behavior of your issue change at all?

    Thanks!
    George

Our permalinks are set to http://gsacarleton.ca/2015/09/sample-post/
Changing that to the default permalink structure (/?p=123) results in 404s when bringing up /events to see the calendar.

Changing from offset style to named city style for timezones has no effect.

Also issue still occurs with the 3.12.2 update that just came out. Here is the link to a new mirror with the updated event calendar plugins, all other plugins off, 2014 theme. http://488.54b.myftpupload.com/event/

We are using a custom date format 2015/09/24.

    @wanganuiedc
, sorry you have the same bug, but it does feel good not being alone here. Two data points should make isolating the bug easier for the both of us.

Ok folks – here we go with the trouble-shooting step by step:

    1. Changed to 2013 theme – Still broken
    2. Disabled all plugins except for Tribe ones – which are EC, EC Pro, EC Housekeeper, EC Community Events. – Still Broken
    3. Cleared the cache – Still Broken.
    4. Activated orginal theme – Still Broken
    5. Now, overwhelmed at testing all the plugins on this horrible website I have inherited one by one, on a whim I just test the Tribe ones. Now – a clue! I turn off everything but basic Events Calendar. – Fixed!
    6. I turn the Tribe plugins back on one by one. As soon as I activate EC Pro – Breaks.
    7. I turn back on every single plugin Except EC Pro – Fixed.
    8. Turn back on EC Pro – Breaks.

Now its time for lunch, but there we go. Its something to do with Events Calendar Pro. If I get time this afternoon I’ll have a play with the settings.

    Righteo –

    1) Changed the permalink structure from ‘Month and name’ to ‘Post Name’ – Still Broken
    2) Tried default but it messed up the site, have left it on ‘Post Name’
    3) EC Template – changed from Full to Tribe style – Still broken but looks better – will keep that!
    4) Changed datepicker to NZ style – Still Broken
    5) Changed WP date format to match – Still Broken
    6) Mucked around with Timesize settings – Still Broken
    7) Turned off ‘Recurring events instances’ – It works!
    8) Turned on ‘Recurring events instances’ – It breaks!

So there we go folks – clues as to our mystery problem – now is it beer o’clock yet?

BTW – great plugin Tribe – used it on a few sites – good work!

    Cheers

I have duplicated the detective work of @wanganuiedc on our site.

Disabling the EC pro plugin makes the back link work properly. With the EC pro plugin enabled, the links work if “Recurring event instances” is toggled off.

With that level of detail @george, can you replicate the issue on your systems?

You folks are truly awesome! Thank you so much for your detailed testing here, I was in fact able to reproduce this issue with the additional details and I just submitted a nice, detailed bug report ticket to our developers.

I’m sorry that this problem exists at all for you folks, but at least we now know there is a bug here. We have a release coming soon and if this a small bug we can hopefully get it fixed by then.

What your thoughts on this? Is there anything I can help further with here?

Thank you so much for your troubleshooting skills and for your patience with us as we try and find, then fix this bug.

    Sincerely,
    George

    No probs @George.

Its not a biggie and for now I’ll just leave the recurring unchecked – I’m sure you guys will fix it up for the next patch.

My only other question at this time is – Do you know if there is any secret underground movement with making the events calendar events sharbale across multiple instances? I’ve voted on it a few times – I think it was being investigated.

I would like to purchase multiple copies and have them synced to each other, or, just have one ‘master’ that feeds to the other ones.

    Cheers guys!

    Hey @wanganuiedc,

Thank you for your patience regarding that bug! And indeed, we’ve got a ticket for it now in our bug-tracking system and are working on a fix to include an upcoming release. Stay tuned for that one!

In regards to your other question:

Do you know if there is any secret underground movement with making the events calendar events sharbale across multiple instances? I’ve voted on it a few times – I think it was being investigated.

Well, I’ve gotten in touch with some top-secret sources and indeed have some information regarding this 😉 It’s unfortunately somewhat-bad news. The good part is that this feature is on our radar in a general sense, and you are definitely not the only customer who has voiced interest in this feature!

However: as a feature, though it may not seem like it, it’s a really complex and complicated thing to do. It would imply rewriting pretty sizable chunks of our code. So it’s something we’re interested in, but not something that could become realized within the plugin itself for quite some time. I would be very surprised to see anything like this in the plugin before at least a year from now.

I’m sorry to bear that news! Let me know what you think and if there is anything else I can help with! (And you too, @gsacarleton 🙂 )

    Sincerely,
    George

Way to go team! A US-CA-NZ collaboration. I wish it was always this easy. I’m using the workaround of unchecking recurring as we wait until the patch. I’m glad this thread is here in case others run into the issue.

Rumours as to a secret underground movement are almost totally false.

    Changing status to closed.

No probs @George – thanks for your great support!

Thanks also for the update on the multiple-feed thingy whatsit – Again, not a biggie but I will keep an eye out for that feature!

Am thinking at this stage to investigate creating a Facebook events page and pull events from there from multiple calendars, I do believe I saw you guys had a plugin for that somewhere in my travels. Or a Google calendar, or something – will stress about that when I get there 😛

As @gsacarleton said, its good to have this bug documented and hopefully will be of help to others so that sometime, somewhere, a bleary eyed developer can sip their red bull in the comfort of the glow of their computer monitor knowing that this issue will be addressed in the next patch. Cheers!
