Searches in IE 8 are not working correctly on my site. For example, if users paste a search for all NH events in the address bar, the first page shows the correct events in IE, but clicking “next events” resets the search to show all events.

Additionally, it seems that any search does not work in IE, as clicking the Next Events button will reset the search after the correct events were shown on the first page. Or the “Near” location value is not recognized at all by IE, even for the first page of events.

The searches do work correctly in Firefox and Chrome. Is there a snippet or something else required to get TEC to function correctly in Internet Explorer?

    Hi Sean,

I may need to pass this over to a colleague with access to IE, but before I do so I note you already tried deactivating all other plugins and switching to a default, unmodified theme: can you confirm that the issue still persisted under those conditions?

    Thanks!

Hi Barry. Thanks for the quick response! The issue is unfortunately still persisting even with the default 2012 theme and all plugins deactivated.

Hi Sean, sorry to hear that.

I did check in with the team on this one as Internet Explorer 8 is a fairly old browser at this point (5 years old in fact, which is a long time in web years!) and the fact is we’re not going to be able to guarantee compatibility here.

Though we do appreciate it is still in use with a number of users for practical reasons we’re going to have to draw a line here I’m afraid.

Sorry we can’t do much more on this one.

Ok thanks Barry. Totally understand not being able to offer full compatibility for IE 8 where it is 5 years old and would only effect Windows XP users (where it is the last version compatible with the OS).

With that said, I’ve confirmed there are multiple issues when viewing TEC with IE 9 (both on my production site as well as a clean install with the default WP theme and no other plugins activated).

Issues: For the Tribe Events Bar, The Location (Near) search field doesn’t not work: all events are returned. Additionally, when entering values in either the Date (Events from) or Search fields, the first page displays the correct search results, but when clicking “Next Event” the search is reset and all events are shown.

Since IE 9 is the last version available for Windows Vista (which is supported by Microsoft until 2017), I hope TEC would be fully compatible with that version of IE.

Can you please take a look into those bugs and advise?

    Thanks,
    Sean

We can certainly look into this – what I’m going to do though is hand this over to a colleague with easier access to Internet Explorer/the Windows platform as they’ll be in a better position to assess this.

    Hold tight!

    Howdy Sean,

I am able to reproduce that problem myself. It seems that location search is not working in IE9, unless you are already on Map view. This is unfortunate.

I made a snippet to hide this problem until we are able to produce a true fix. Paste it at the top of your theme’s functions.php file, underneath the first line “<?php”. If your theme does not have a functions.php file, go to your theme folder, create a new text document file called “functions.php”, and paste this text in the first line of the file “<?php”. On line 2 or 3, paste that snippet.

Does that snippet work? Do you have any more questions? Please let me know. Cheers!

Thanks Brook. That does offer a temporary fix for the Location search.

What about the Date or Keyword search results resetting when clicking the “Next Events” links? Can you please try to reproduce those errors and let me know if a fix is/will be available?

    Thanks!

I am sorry, I missed that part of your post, Sean. I do see what you are talking about in IE9. I am glad you pointed this out. We must have missed it when we did our testing in IE9. I will certainly file a bug report. Unfortunately IE9 is the only browser left that we support that does itself support the HTML History API so we have to put together quite a few workarounds to support it.

To be honest I think this is going to be a bit of a lower priority issue since it is mostly cosmetic and only affects one browser. Clicking Next/Prev continues the current search, it just causes the search fields to reset to being blank, so you would need to retype your query if you are going to modify it. I can not say for sure when it will be released. If we had unlimited time and resources it would definitely be in our next release. Alas of course we do not so we have to prioritize fixes based on many users they affect and how big of a deal it is.

Actually the issue is that search is completely broken in IE 9. I wish it was only cosmetic (that’d make it a minor issue for my users as well), but if you perform a search and then click on “next events” not only are the fields shown as blank, the search results themselves are also reset.

For example, if you go to my clean install with the default WP theme and no other plugins activated), try typing in “classic” as the keyword search term, or selecting May 4 as the date. The first page returns the correct results, but after clicking on “next page” the entire search is reset. I’d be with you on the cosmetic issue being low priority, but since the calendar is not usable beyond the first page of results, I hope this is something that can be addressed ASAP. Please advise. Thanks!

    Howdy Sean,

I was unable to produce that result on a testing server running a clean install, nor on our example demo site. You can test the demo site here: http://wpshindig.com/events/upcoming/?action=tribe_list&tribe_paged=1&tribe-bar-date=2014-01-01&tribe-bar-search=meetup

Are you able to produce the problem on our demo site? Try as I might I have been unable to in any of the testing servers I have tried. Please let me know. Thanks!

    Hey Brook,
Sorry, you’ll need to have the Filter Bar plugin activated in order to reproduce the error of the entire search being reset upon clicking “next events.” I tried deactivating it and was able to continue with the current search, but when the Filter Bar (and Community Events) plugins are activated alongside TEC PRO, all searches are reset in IE 9 as soon as the “next event” button is clicked.

Hopefully you are able to reproduce the error with that config. Let me know…Thanks!

    Hi Brook,
Were you able to reproduce this error? Thanks.

Well that is certainly more than a cosmetic issue. I was able to reproduce that issue when I enabled Filterbar. Normally I always have that plugin enabled, but my testing environment is a bit different on older versions of IE. I apologize for not catching on sooner.

I just updated the bug report to include this information, and bumped up the suggested priority. It is now up to our development team to figure out where they can fit this in the development schedule, since they are also aware of any other bugs that may need fixing and their schedules.

Thank you so much for reporting this Sean. We definitely want to get it fixed as soon as we can. I appreciate your thorough testing too, it helped narrow things down nicely.

Thanks very much Brook. Happy to help! If it’s possible to update this thread when a fix is released, that’d be much appreciated. Either way I’ll keep an eye out on the blog, etc.

    Sean
