MemberIs there a simple way to let users of my site search for events by location. Like, Can I create a custom search box with the instructions ( enter your State ) then press enter. Of course I would need to know how to tell the search box to specifically filter the target value type.
If none of this makes any sense then feel free to yell at me and I will try to explain myself better.June 12, 2012 at 6:22 pm #20586Rob
MemberThis is a solid idea, Craig. Are you speaking specifically to Community Events? IE would this only be submitted events by users, or would it pull in from admin (normal) created events as well? Just want to make sure I fully understand 🙂

MemberHey, Rob. Sorry for the delay in responding. It’s the time difference that comes from living in Australia.
I expect that most users implement your great plugins to promote events in one region or city. And see the events calendar as an addition to their blog. However, I am looking beyond that. The site that I am putting together is “Just Auditions”. A directory of auditions for any location in which the site becomes popular. Promotion of auditions is the sole purpose of the site. It is aimed primarily at theatre and stage so I would guess that such a search option would need to target the location where the audition would be held. ( The venue ) Or at the very least the state the venue is in, so that a search would return a good number of results. I only noticed a day ago that the community plugin had no stock search field on the frontend for the public to do this. It made me think that you all may be underestimating the value of your plugins. To try and answer your question more directly. The events ( auditions ) submitted by users ( theaters ) would need to be searchable by site visiters. The search box would probably go in the . As there is no off the shelf solution I am happy to discuss some custom coding for this option.June 13, 2012 at 5:44 am #20622Craig
MemberSorry. The comment box rejected the full div code that I tried to paste into the text. so it cut it out. (The search box would probably go In the “tribe-events-calendar-header.)
P.s. Is the location info a custom field or a custom category. Or is it something else?June 19, 2012 at 2:20 am #20829Craig
MemberHi Rob, I think that this message has been overlooked due to email notification being down. Still interested to hear your thoughts on location searching and potential custom coding.

MemberHey Craig! No worries, I’ve also been pulled away from the forums due to some support emergencies elsewhere…so I’m a bit behind in getting responses here too.
So if I understand correctly, what you’re trying to do is extend the search functionality to account for these auditions your community members are submitting. This should be doable but how and when is the wild card. Our officially-supported tool for this is in the works and should be released as an included with PRO over the next couple months, and will allow for advanced search features delving deeper than what basic WP can offer.
In the interim, though, I see there are a number of third-party plugins that could ease with this and are available for free. The most promising of those seems to be http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search-everything/ – have you checked that out? I haven’t tested it myself, but it’s done by Dan Cameron…who has worked with us on a few projects before and from what I’ve seen is a solid dev. Would a plugin like that meet your needs?

MemberHi Rob,
Given that you anticipate such a search tool soon then I can wait. I had no idea that you had one in the works. I will take a look at your suggested search plugin to cover me while I wait for the official one to hit the updates.
Just so I understand what you are planning for the search tool. Will it exist on the frontend of the site for the general public to use?June 21, 2012 at 4:50 pm #21013Rob
MemberHey Craig. Awesome to hear – yup, this tool will definitely be frontend-centric.
Hope that helps! Let me know what else you need.
