Hi Marcus, nice to see you again and I hope all is well!

I’m sorry to say that it is not currently possible to create an RSS feed directly from a filtered search of cities.

That said, it is possible to use the URL of a Venue to create an RSS feed. I’m not sure if that gets you exactly what you’re looking for, but it is one way to get a location-based feed of events.

Sorry for the bad news, but does this at least help answer your question? Please let me know.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Hi, thanks for replying, now I won’t have to go through hours of not finding the solution.

Can categories be RSS? I am thinking about a workaround perhaps where I could make cities into categories and then rss them. That would be an acceptable workaround since all venues are there, I just have to manually fill in the city once more. Or can no meta from an event be RSS?

    Hey Marcus,

Yes, RSS feeds can parse event categories. So, for example, if you have a category called “Concert” you can find the feed for the category by heading to:

    [your-site]/events/category/concert/feed

Is this what you were looking for?

    Cheers man,
    Geoff

Thank you, I will try to do a workaround on this. But still: is it possible to make a direct link to a search? Like for instance if I want to make a bookmark/starting page in my browser, I need a link, but the long link in my first entry here doesn’t work. Is this not at all possible?

    Hi Marcus,

Hope you had a great weekend!

Yes, you should be able to use the URL to link directly to the same filtered results.

Your link does not appear to do that. However, I was able to use a similar URL when checking on my test site.

I do see that you have older versions of the plugin installed. Would you be willing to update the following plugins:

    • The Events Calendar 4.3.3
    • Events Calendar PRO 4.3.3
    • Community Events 4.3.1
    • Filter Bar 4.3.3

Let’s start there to see if that clears things up. I’m hoping it does but, if it does not, then I also see that you are using two other third-party plugins that make use of The Events Calendar and we can start digging into those if needed.

    Cheers!

Hi, I updated them all and now when I search for “Stockholm” I get this url:

    http://bokdatum.se/?action=tribe_photo&tribe_paged=1&tribe_event_display=photo&tribe-bar-search=stockholm

But when I use the url I only get the first page. Weird right?

Hey Marcus, thanks for following up on this!

    That is weird, for sure.

Just to confirm, how are you using The Events Calendar as your homepage? My hunch is that you are using the Event Rocket to do that — is that correct?

The reason I ask is because The Events Calendar does not offer that as a setting right out of the box and changing the destination of the calendar like that could lead to URL redirect conflicts, like what we’re seeing here.

If you can confirm that for me, we can spend some time testing my theory. That will likely require you to spin up a fresh test site so we can try test linking in a default WordPress environment, but let’s see if you are indeed using Event Rocket to get the calendar on the homepage first and then move forward from there.

    Thanks!

Actually I don’t remember what I use event rocket for. But it is not for setting the events calendar as a homepage. I think my theme does that.

I deactivated Event rocket now and the url problem remains. Should I set up the test site?

Oh cool! I bet you can remove Event Rocket altogether in that case. It has since been retired by the author and is no longer maintained, so it is likely not serving you a purpose at this point since you’re running the latest versions of our plugins.

Let’s do the test site and we will use it to test whether the URL returned by Filter Bar works correctly, like it does on my test site. To do this, we’ll be working in a default WordPress environment. Here’s how to start:

    • Please install a fresh copy of WordPress in a subdirectory (if you have a CPanel-type hosting account there will probably be a one-click install script to make this really easy)
    • Don’t install anything except The Events Calendar and Events Calendar PRO, Filter Bar and Community Events
    • Please also stick to a default theme, like WordPress Twenty Sixteen — again, there’s no need to install anything else just yet!
    • Create a few events so we have some test data to work with
    • Use the Filter Bar to filter the calendar and generate a URL for that filtered search
    • Can you replicate the same problem? In other words, does that URL link directly to the filtered results?

If you find you can replicate the problem under these conditions it would be awesome if you could stop and let us know so we can take a look while the site is still running under default conditions.

Thanks for your help while we work on this together!

    Cheers!

Thanks for your patience. I created bokdatum.se/testsida and now it works, I can do a search and then use the url.

For instance, if I want to make a start page for a city, I can use:

    http://bokdatum.se/testsida/?tribe_paged=1&tribe_event_display=list&eventDisplay=list&post_type=tribe_events&tribe-bar-geoloc-lat=59.32932349999999&tribe-bar-geoloc-lng=18.068580800000063&tribe-bar-geoloc=stockholm

This would be really helpful for my visitors to be able to do.

In the dashboard, I get the following error message for community events (my translation):

Community events requires its own permalink structure without question marks or that the Community Events shortcode [tribe_community_events] is present in all pages.

Nothing here makes me any smarter though. Should I start adding the plugins/theme I have to see if something breaks the site?

    Nice work, Marcus!

You’re doing everything perfectly so far.

Seeing that filtered URL works on the test site is a really encouraging sign because it means the functionality does indeed work. Now we need to pinpoint where the breakage occurs and your last note about adding components to the site is exactly right.

Please start with the theme — install that and let’s see if the URL continues to work. If so, great! You can move on to installing each plugin one-by-one and testing as you go to see which one is possibly getting in the way.

I appreciate your help with this. What this does tell me is that there is not a bug in the plugins when it comes to the URL working but rather something else on the site that is preventing it from working. Once we’ve pinned down what that thing is, we can see if there is a workaround to make it work — or, the best course of action might be to reach out to the theme/plugin author for more advice.

Let’s see where adding the theme back in gets us and then go from there.

    Thanks so much!

Hi, just to let anyone who might be visiting this thread in the unlikely event they have the same problem:

I tried deactivating all plugins one by one and reinstalling themes but nothing worked.

Turned out I used “Event rocket” to set the events page as homepage AND I had put some noob code in .htaccess to try to the same thing at one point (I should really keep a diary of what I do)

    #Alternate default index page
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^$ /http://bokdatum.se/?post_type=tribe_events [L]

Once I removed the code above in .htaccess it was possible to direct link to a search query.

Oh wow, nice sleuthing Marcus! I had a hunch that Event Rocket was being used for the homepage, but the extra layer of a redirect in .htaccess adds so much more clarity.

Awesome job and thanks for following up to let me and the rest of the community know.

    Cheers!
    Geoff
