"Related Events" Displaying Randomly Ordered Events

On the Single Event Post page I have activated Related Events. When these three events are listed, it would seem that they would be the next upcoming events. However, the list of events have random dates up to three years away. Is there a way to make these Related Events be the NEXT three chronologically related events?
As an example, I have attached images of the related events for a Single Event occurring 1/24/18. They appear in order of 9/1/2019, 1/12/2020, 6/23/2019. (Yes, jumping years in a haphazard way.)
There are at least two events weekly for the next three years that could qualify as Related. Why are these random ones chosen?
