Recurring event tooltip

The info in the tooltip displayed for a recurring event shows the same “description” that is on the Post Editor or Community Events form (which helps the admin or author understand what recurrence they are setting). For example:

An event every week on the same day that lasts 0 day(s) and 0 hour(s), but only create 10 event(s)

Clearly that does not help the end user understand when the event actually occurs. I am aware that in the past the tooltips have shown a much more user friendly description of the recurring event. For example, the above description would have previously automatically been set to display “Every week for 10 weeks”

Can you explain why this was changed and if there is a way to return the tooltip to automatically display the old, user-friendly descriptions? Having to manually type in a custom description for every recurring event simply isn’t very feasible 🙂

I would be happy to explain. When we added the ability to select multiple recurrence patterns our old simple descriptions were no longer able to handle the complexity.

We are investigating ways to simplify them and still handle complexity. It might be possible to simplify some of the patterns, such as the one you suggested. But it is likely not going to be possible with all of them.

I am adding you to our list of users who want this simplified. When a fix is made available for this we will notify you that it is ready, and provide instructions on how to obtain it.

Hi Brook,

Ah, okay. Yes, with more complicated recurrence patterns I can see how the description would not be able to be as simple. Hopefully for the cases in which there are no “rules” the previous descriptions could still be used. Look forward to a fix whenever it is ready!

Excellent. Thanks for your understanding. We have seen 5 people request this, which automatically makes it a bit of a higher priority than some of our other feature enhancements. I doubt you will see this in the 4.0 series as we have stopped adding features a while back, but maybe the 4.1.x series.

We’ll get back to you when the feature is nearing release.
