    Hi
I’m struggling to make friends with the recurring event feature (which is the reason I bought the pro version).
The first thing I notice is that rather than make a ‘recurring event’ it simply makes a bunch of duplicate events. Maybe this is the only way the feature could be implemented in WordPress but it seems messy and also I think it’s bad for SEO because you wind up with lots of duplicate content?
The main problem though is that if I open one occurrence of an event and save it, It proceeds to delete all the previous occurrences of the event.
If I re-open one of the remaining events and alter the dates back to the original first date and then save again then it recreates the earlier events.
It seems kind of flakey. Can anyone advise?
    Thanks

    Hi James,

I’m not sure I understand your first item. How else could the recurring event feature work if not duplicating the same event? Sure, it may not be ideal for SEO, but in some cases you are going to have events that happen on the same days every month with the same information. This is one of the main reasons we built the recurring feature. Otherwise, you would have to manually duplicate or copy information for those events and that would be pretty cumbersome.

On the second issue, that sounds like a potential problem that shouldn’t be happening the way it is. Is this happening for all recurring events or only some? You should always get a dialog popup when saving information for recurring events that asks you whether to apply the changes to the current event (which will break it out of the pattern) or applying the changes to all the events in the pattern. Are you not seeing this dialog? If you are not seeing the dialog, we are aware of an issue along these lines and we have a patch you can try installing. Replace /wp-content/plugins/events-calendar-pro/resources/events-admin.js with this copy: http://cl.ly/code/1v382M03033d

If that doesn’t work, would you be willing to provide me wp-admin access so I can take a look at some things? Please email access to pro [at] tri [dot] be, attn. to me and reference this thread.

    Thanks,
    Jonah

HI Jonah. Thanks for your quick reply.
I think I was expecting there to be one event with multiple dates rather than simply a rapid duplication feature. But I think the real problem is that it isn’t working as designed – to me it just appears that I have several different events which are nominally linked together but unpredictable things happen when you alter any of them. I don’t get the dialog you describe but will try installing the patch and see what happens.
    Thanks again
    James

sorry it turns out I don’t know how to edit the events-admin.js file. I’m new to WordPress and don’t know where I find this file…

Hi James, the path for the file to be patched is: /wp-content/plugins/events-calendar-pro/resources/events-admin.js

it wouldn’t let me alter the file due to permissions and I don’t know how/if you can set those in WordPress so I deleted the plug in and uploaded a new version with the altered file. I do get the dialog now, thank you, and it doesn’t seem to be deleting the older events.

Hi James, that’s great. So are you all set here? If you see the issue crop again please create another thread and you can reference this thread if you like.

    Thanks,
    Jonah
