Thanks for your interest! The way the sidebar works on wpshindig is one of the default configurations. You can set the calendar to show 0 events underneath, but in that case if a visitor clicks a date they will be taken to a list of those events in Day View. So the events of that day wouldn’t list underneath the widget, if that’s what you’re asking. You might be able to customize it so that it shows 0 until clicked on, but that would be out of our scope of support to help with.
There is currently no default way to make a category dropdown like you describe. It’s a popular request, and we are working on a Filters Bar plugin that would give allow visitors to filter events by all sorts of things including category and tag. Some folks have customized their calendars to have dropdowns, but again that would require a decent amount of work on your end- although we might be able to help point you in the right direction.
One way to achieve something similar is to make links in your menu (or sidebar, perhaps) to different categories of events. We have an FAQ about that here.
