Permalink for recurring events works fine but not single events

I am sure I am just missing something simple. When you setup a recurring event it adds the date to the url and that seems to work perfect. When it is a single event, it does not add this and I am getting a 404 page

Example:
I setup a single event for our VBS and this is the permalink generated and gives me a 404
https://www.swcoc.org/event/swcoc-vbs-2018/

if I change to this it works
https://www.swcoc.org/event/swcoc-vbs-2018/2018-06-10/

Now I have started to play with enough stuff I am afraid of breaking something in my ignorance in this area…

Your calendar and event pages look so different from what our plugins produce (even at HTML markup level) that I wanted to pause and ask if you’re still actively using it or if you’ve actually switched to a different solution.

I see your theme basically bakes in a calendar tool of its own … is that what you are using here?
